Yes, you can request annual leave to play Grand Theft Auto VI, but there is no special GTA 6 leave entitlement and approval for particular dates is not guaranteed. Fair Work Ombudsman guidance says annual-leave timing is agreed between employee and employer, and an employer may refuse a request only if the refusal is reasonable. The ordinary workplace rules apply.
What the Fair Work advice about GTA 6 means
A 7 October 2026 secondary report described a Fair Work Ombudsman social post using Grand Theft Auto VI as a humorous way to explain existing leave options. The original post was not available, so its exact wording and complete list of options cannot be confirmed. The reported post does not create a new entitlement, endorse taking leave to play, or guarantee that an employer will approve a launch-day request.

The governing rules are the usual ones. Section 88 of the Fair Work Act 2009 says paid annual leave may be taken for a period agreed between an employee and employer, and that an employer must not unreasonably refuse a request. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s annual-leave guidance likewise says refusal is permitted only when reasonable.
How to request annual leave for a game launch
- Check your leave balance. Full-time and part-time employees generally accrue four weeks of annual leave for each year of employment. Casual employees do not receive paid annual leave under the general guidance.
- Check the rules that apply at work. Your award, registered agreement, employment contract or workplace policy may set details such as how and when to submit a request.
- Ask before taking the time off. Request the specific dates through your workplace’s usual process. Annual leave is not self-approved; the period must be agreed with your employer.
- Plan for a possible refusal. Your employer must not unreasonably refuse the request, but that does not mean every requested date has to be approved. If refused, ask for the reason and whether alternative dates can be agreed.
Annual leave, sick leave and unpaid leave are different

Can your boss refuse annual leave for GTA 6?
An employer can refuse an annual-leave request only if the refusal is reasonable, according to the Fair Work Ombudsman. The rule does not guarantee the exact date you ask for: the timing must be agreed, and your workplace’s applicable award, agreement, contract or policy may affect the request process.
