No—not if you’re starting from scratch. Meta’s AI Studio once let Instagram creators build AI versions of themselves to answer common fan messages, but Meta says that as of August 10, 2026, people can no longer create new AI characters or edit existing ones there. Existing characters and chats remain active while Meta upgrades them.
What Instagram’s AI clone feature was
The feature was part of Meta AI Studio, a software tool Meta launched in July 2024 for creating and sharing custom AI characters. It was not a physical device. Meta described the creator version as a way to set up “an AI as an extension of themselves” that could quickly answer common direct-message questions and story replies. Meta’s July 29, 2024 announcement explained the launch and its controls.
At launch, creators could build an AI character through AI Studio or from a new Instagram message by tapping “AI chats.” They could keep it private, share it with followers and friends, or make it discoverable across Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and the web. A contemporaneous TechCrunch report on the U.S. rollout also described the feature as a tool for creator-fan interaction.

The idea was to handle routine interactions, not to make every reply personally written by the creator. A creator could guide the AI with Instagram content, define subjects it should avoid, select links it could share, and control whether it replied automatically and to whom.

Meta said replies from creator AIs were clearly labeled so people could tell they were interacting with an AI. The launch materials described configuration and intended uses, but did not establish response-quality or performance benchmarks.
Why you may not find AI Studio’s creator builder
Meta’s AI Studio page, updated August 10, 2026, says people can no longer create new AI characters or edit existing ones as part of AI Studio. It also says existing characters and chats remain active and are being upgraded to Meta’s latest model infrastructure. That means the old creation steps are historical; they should not be treated as instructions for setting up a new Instagram clone today.

If you already had a creator AI, Meta’s update indicates it may continue operating during the upgrade. The notice does not promise that every existing character will remain unchanged or specify how long the transition will take. For the current status, check Meta AI Studio.

What to expect if you wanted an AI to answer your DMs
AI Studio’s creator feature was designed to answer selected routine questions and story replies using the creator’s guidance and controls. It was not a guarantee that an AI could represent you accurately in every conversation. A creator deciding whether to use an AI responder would need to consider what information it should share, which topics it should avoid, who may receive replies, and when a person should handle a conversation instead.

For new creators, Meta’s August 10, 2026 notice means this specific AI Studio workflow is not currently available for making a new character. The cited announcements do not establish a replacement creation path or an alternative tool with equivalent Instagram integration and controls.
