Sometimes. A studio shutting down does not automatically remove a game from your library, but it also does not guarantee the game will remain fully playable. Store access, online authentication, and the game’s reliance on publisher servers are separate issues—and they can have different outcomes.
What happens when a game studio closes?
The studio’s closure alone does not determine whether you can download or play a game. The game may remain on sale, be delisted, or continue to be available to people who already own it. Separately, its online services may continue or shut down. The result depends on the title, platform, store policy, and the features you want to use.

Valve says a retired Steam game remains in existing players’ libraries and can still be downloaded, installed, and launched. That is Steam’s stated policy; it is not a guarantee that every game on every platform will remain available, or that a retired game’s online services will work. Steamworks: Retiring a game
Delisting, store closure, and server shutdown are different
- Studio closure: The developer stops operating. This does not by itself say whether the store listing or servers will remain.
- Game delisting: New customers can no longer buy the title from a particular storefront. Existing-library access depends on that store’s policy and the game’s requirements.
- Store closure: A platform stops operating its purchasing storefront. That does not necessarily disable previously acquired games.
- Server shutdown: Publisher-run online services end. Multiplayer or other online features may stop, and an always-online game may become unplayable even if it is still installed.
These events can happen independently. For example, Xbox says previously purchased Xbox 360 games remain playable and re-downloadable after the Xbox 360 Store closed, while multiplayer depends on whether the publisher continues to support the game’s servers. Xbox: Xbox 360 Store retirement

Can you redownload a game after it is delisted?
Often, but check the policy for the store where you bought it rather than assuming all platforms work the same way. Valve says retired Steam games stay in players’ libraries and remain downloadable. GOG says a delisted game remains in the user’s library and that its offline installers can still be downloaded. These are statements about those storefronts, not universal promises.
PlayStation’s UK support page says PS3 and PS Vita users can continue to play content they own, subject to the game’s online features and service availability, and can re-download prior purchases for the foreseeable future. That is different from being able to buy new content; details and wording can vary by region. PlayStation: Important notice for PS3 and PS Vita

GOG also describes preservation work that tests and updates selected games for popular PC configurations. Its program is currently Windows-only. An offline installer can reduce dependence on an active storefront for a suitable game, but it cannot restore publisher servers, remove every DRM or authentication requirement, or guarantee compatibility with future systems. Will the game still work when its servers shut down?
It depends on which parts of the game rely on servers. A single-player campaign may keep working while multiplayer, cloud features, leaderboards, or access to user-created content stop. An always-online title can lose all playability if it cannot connect to the service it requires. The European Commission has described this server-dependence problem; the outcome for an individual game still depends on how that game was designed and operated. PlayStation’s service notices show why it is worth checking the precise title and mode:
- Gran Turismo Sport: PlayStation said its offline portions, including purchased add-ons, could still be played after the online services ended.
- GUNS UP!: PlayStation said the game would no longer be playable after service termination because it requires an online connection.
- LittleBigPlanet 3: PlayStation said online services and access to other players’ creations would be unavailable, while locally stored user content would remain available.
An installed game is not necessarily an offline game. It may still check a server for login, authentication, saves, content, or core gameplay. If offline play matters to you, test the game without an internet connection before relying on it.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What should you check before counting on continued access?
- Identify the platform and account. Check the platform’s current support information for whether previous purchases can be re-downloaded after a delisting or store closure.
- Look for a title-specific notice. Check the game’s official page or publisher announcement for delisting dates, server shutdown dates, and which functions will remain.
- Separate the features you care about. Check the campaign, multiplayer, add-ons, saved progress, cloud saves, and community content individually; they may depend on different services.
- Test offline access. Disconnect from the internet and try launching the game and using the mode you want. This can reveal an authentication or always-online requirement while the service is still available.
- Save an official installer if one is offered. For a PC game with an offline installer, download it and keep a backup. This helps only with the installer and local files; it cannot preserve server-dependent features or settle questions about licensing.
Do not treat a disc or installer as a guarantee. A disc may still need a patch, online service, or compatible hardware; an installer may have DRM or system-compatibility dependencies.
Does buying a digital game mean you own it permanently?
Not necessarily. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission describes standard-form terms for Steam, Epic Games Store, and PlayStation Network as licences to access and play rather than ownership of a digital copy. Its finding is about the named platform terms and Australian consumer research, not universal legal advice. In its 2025 report, based on a survey conducted in October–November 2024, 56% of surveyed Australian game players said they were unaware that purchasing from some stores may provide a licence rather than ownership.
