The Chromebook Perk that offered two months of Cloud Stop Motion Premium has expired: the 2021 promotion had a September 14, 2022 download deadline. Cloud Stop Motion itself is still available in a Chromebook browser, with a free plan and tools for capturing, editing, and exporting stop-motion videos.
Is the Chromebook Cloud Stop Motion Perk still available?
No. Chrome Unboxed reported the Perk on September 17, 2021 as two months of Cloud Stop Motion Premium, advertised with 15GB of cloud storage and a $19.98 value. Can you make stop-motion videos on a Chromebook now?
Yes. Cloud Stop Motion is a browser-based editor that runs on Chromebooks, laptops, desktops, and tablets without a software installation. The vendor says the latest Chrome version on Chromebook is fully supported. Its tools include frame-by-frame capture, onion-skinning and timing controls, a timeline, audio and narration, green-screen compositing, image import, cloud saving, and MP4 export. How to create a stop-motion video on a Chromebook
- Open the editor: Visit Cloud Stop Motion in Chrome. Create an account or start with the free option.
- Set up your scene: Place your subject in front of the camera and keep the Chromebook and camera steady. A built-in camera can be used; a webcam is a relevant add-on if you want a separate camera position.
- Capture frames: Take one frame, move the subject a small amount, then capture another. Onion-skinning helps you compare the current position with the previous frame, while timing controls affect how the animation plays.
- Edit the sequence: Arrange and trim frames in the timeline. Add narration, music, or sound effects where needed.
- Add effects and export: Use chroma key if you have a green-screen setup. Render the finished animation as an MP4 and share the exported video.
- Keep an eye on storage: Available cloud space depends on your plan, and higher-resolution projects use more of it.
What equipment do you need?
You can begin with a Chromebook camera, a subject, and a stable setup; a separate webcam is optional. For claymation, modeling clay gives you a subject that can be reshaped between frames. The Cloud Stop Motion shop lists an HD Animation Webcam. Whether you use a built-in camera or an external webcam, stability matters: avoid moving the camera or changing the lighting between captures.
