You can no longer start accepting Giropay payments: the service was shut down for new payment acceptance by June 30, 2024. If you use WordPress with WooCommerce and Stripe, remove any manually configured Giropay option and choose a currently supported payment method instead. Stripe says it hid Giropay automatically for many standard integrations, but custom or manually specified setups may still need changes.
Is Giropay still available for WordPress payments?
No. Stripe says Giropay’s owner, Paydirekt, chose to deprecate the service, and payment acceptance stopped by June 30, 2024. Installing a WordPress plugin or changing a checkout setting cannot restore Giropay acceptance through Stripe.
Stripe reports that many accounts using Checkout and Payment Element had Giropay hidden automatically. However, a payment confirmation or source creation request that still specifies Giropay fails with HTTP 402. Stripe’s Giropay availability notice states: “Now that Giropay has been switched off, any PaymentIntent confirmation that specifies payment_method_type as giropay or any Source creation that specifies type as giropay will fail with an HTTP 402 response.”

How to remove Giropay from a Stripe-powered WordPress checkout
The exact steps depend on how your site chooses payment methods. Check whether your integration lets Stripe select methods dynamically or whether your plugin settings or custom code explicitly lists them.

- Review your Stripe integration. Identify the payment gateway plugin, any custom checkout code, and whether payment methods are dynamically selected or manually configured.
- Check the customer-facing checkout. If Giropay is still displayed, inspect the plugin’s payment-method settings and any custom checkout configuration. Remove Giropay from manually selected payment types and checkout choices; do not add or request it again.
- Update any Connect integration. If your platform uses Stripe Connect and requests payment capabilities for connected accounts, stop requesting the Giropay capability.
- Test the revised checkout. Confirm that Giropay is no longer offered and that the remaining enabled payment methods complete payment as expected.
- Remove outdated references. Update payment-method lists, help pages, and customer-support instructions on your site so they do not direct buyers to Giropay.
For a plugin-specific setting, use the current documentation for that plugin rather than assuming all WordPress checkouts use the same controls. A WordPress.org ThemeHigh Stripe plugin changelog, for example, records Giropay’s removal in September 2024 because Stripe no longer supported it.
What can you use instead in WooCommerce?
WooCommerce documents both its Stripe extension and WooPayments as payment options. Neither is a universal replacement for every merchant: eligibility, available methods, fees, and customer fit depend on your business and account configuration. Confirm what your provider offers in your dashboard and current documentation before changing gateways.

Compare providers and methods against your business needs rather than treating one option as a direct substitute for Giropay.

- Operations: Review refund, settlement, and dispute workflows, including any transaction-specific limits.
- Compatibility: Check the gateway’s requirements against your WooCommerce, WordPress, and PHP versions. WooCommerce notes that recent software versions are required for Stripe extension setup; consult its current setup documentation.
As a dated reference, WooPayments’ Germany fee documentation lists card payments at 1.50% + €0.25, Klarna at 2.99% + €0.35, and SEPA at €0.35. These are provider-published figures, not a guarantee of your account’s pricing; confirm the current WooPayments fee schedule before making a decision.

What about refunds for earlier Giropay payments?
Stripe says refunds for Stripe Giropay transactions continue to process normally after June 30, 2024. That guidance is specific to Stripe; check your own processor’s rules for any transaction-level refund limits or other restrictions.
