Yes. In The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, you can craft a bow at a forge when its recipe is available, then improve its damage at a grindstone using the material the game requires. Your Smithing skill and unlocked perks affect which weapons you can forge and how well you can forge them.
How Smithing works for bows
Smithing has two relevant uses: crafting weapons at a forge and improving weapon damage at a grindstone. Bethesda’s Skyrim game manual explains that a higher Smithing skill supports better forging and that perks unlock additional weapon and armor options.
How to craft a bow
- Go to a forge. Forges are used to create weapons and armor.
- Check the available recipes. Select the bow you want. If the game lists a recipe, review its required components in the interface.
- Craft it if you have the listed components. Recipe availability and requirements depend on the bow and the crafting options you have unlocked.
The manual describes the general Smithing system, but it does not provide a complete list of craftable bows or bow-specific component and perk requirements. Use the in-game recipe rather than relying on a universal materials list.

How to improve a bow at a grindstone
- Use a grindstone. This station improves weapon damage.
- Select your bow. Check the required improvement material shown in the game.
- Apply the improvement if you have the required material. The game interface is the source for the requirement for that bow.
Smithing skill and perks are relevant to forging options, but the manual passage does not establish exact bow-specific skill thresholds, perk names, material amounts, or improvement outcomes.

What to check for your specific bow
- Whether its recipe appears at a forge.
- Which components the recipe lists.
- Whether the bow can be improved at a grindstone and which material the game requires.
- Which Smithing options you have unlocked through your skill and perks.
