Sometimes. Whether you can share a VPN account depends on the provider and the specific plan you hold. A plan that allows several devices or simultaneous connections does not, on its own, mean the provider lets a second person use your login. Before you hand anyone your credentials, check the current terms for your plan and look at what else that login can open.
Provider rules differ, so check your own plan
There is no industry-wide rule for VPN account sharing. Each provider sets its own terms, and the examples below show how far apart those terms can be. The terms and connection limits described here were checked for this article in October 2026. Providers revise them, so treat this table as a starting point and confirm against your provider’s current terms.
| Provider | Is sharing the login with another person allowed? | Connection or device allowance | What to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| IVPN | No. Its terms prohibit sharing an account with another person, including someone in the same household. | Device accounting is explained in IVPN’s support article. Do not read the device allowance as permission to share. | The strictest example here. Sharing with a housemate is still a terms breach. |
| Surfshark | Yes for family members. Its support article says account details can be shared with family. | Unlimited simultaneous connections, according to the same support article. | This is Surfshark’s stated policy. It does not extend to other services, and “family” is the operative term. |
| Proton VPN (Proton Family, Duo, or eligible organization plans) | Each group member has their own VPN access rather than a shared password. | Each member gets their own VPN connection allocation. The default is ten connections per member. | The account administrator can disable an individual member’s VPN connections. |
| Private Internet Access | Not stated in the material reviewed for this article. | Conflicting. A support page describes unlimited simultaneous connections, while a terms page sets a maximum of ten simultaneous connections. | Do not rely on either figure. Check your account page or ask support for your plan’s current limit. |
| HorizonVPN | Depends on the current plan. Its help article, updated September 16, 2026, ties household use to the plan. | Not stated in the reviewed article. | The help article advises using a strong password and never posting credentials in shared chats or public spaces. |
Device limits and permission are separate questions
Most VPN plans count two different things, and readers often mix them up. A registered-device limit controls how many devices can be set up under the account. A simultaneous-connection limit controls how many can be connected at once. Neither one tells you who is allowed to use the login.

The only reliable answer comes from the provider’s terms, which set out who may use the account. If the terms are silent or unclear, ask support in writing before you share.

What handing over a login actually exposes
Sharing a login gives the other person whatever access that login grants, which can be more than VPN use. Some providers use one identity across several products. Proton states that its Proton Account credentials work across Proton services, so a shared password can reach more than the VPN.
Proton’s account-security guidance names three common routes to compromise: phishing, reusing a password that appeared in a data breach, and malware. It also says an account may be temporarily locked after suspicious activity. Sharing a credential widens the number of people who could expose it through any of those routes.

Sharing does not, on its own, let the account owner see the other person’s browsing. The sources reviewed here establish risks to credentials and account access. They do not establish that a VPN subscriber can inspect another user’s traffic.
If you share anyway, reduce the damage
- Use only a plan whose terms permit the arrangement, and check whether it distinguishes household members from friends or people at other addresses.
- Give the password only in a private message to someone you trust. Never post it in group chats or public spaces.
- Do not reuse the VPN password on any other service. Use a unique, strong password.
- Turn on two-factor authentication if the provider offers it.
- If the login also opens email, cloud storage, a password manager, billing, or account-recovery settings, do not share it. Use a separate account instead.
- If you stop trusting the person or suspect misuse, remove their access where the provider allows it, then change the password.
- If you receive a compromise warning, follow the provider’s account-recovery steps before doing anything else.
Safer options: separate seats instead of a shared password
Where a plan gives each person their own identity, use that instead of a shared login. Proton’s family structure is the clearest example in the sources reviewed. Each member has their own VPN access, and the administrator can switch off one member’s VPN connections without changing anyone else’s access. That gives you a revocation control a shared password cannot provide.

A VPN installed on a router protects every device connected to that router, including devices that cannot run a VPN app, such as some smart TVs and game consoles. Each person can use the network without knowing the VPN account password. Proton VPN’s router guide describes this benefit in these words: “A VPN router protects every device connected to your home network.”

What your router needs
The router must support OpenVPN or WireGuard as a client. Proton’s guide notes that many ISP-supplied routers do not support VPN configuration. Setup can be difficult, and installing incompatible firmware or software incorrectly can make a router stop working. Confirm that a specific model supports your provider’s protocol before you buy it.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Limits to plan for
- The VPN does not encrypt the connection between a device and the router, so the Wi-Fi network still needs a strong password and current encryption.
- On a less powerful router, the VPN can reduce speeds.
- Changing the server location requires editing the router’s configuration.
- Some app features may not work through a router connection.
- Router-wide settings apply to every connected device unless the router supports per-device routing.
How to check your plan before you share
- Open your provider’s terms of service and search for words such as “sharing,” “share,” “household,” “family,” and “another person.”
- Check the plan’s device limit and simultaneous-connection limit in the account area or help center. Note them separately.
- If the terms are unclear, contact support and ask in writing whether a second person may use your login.
- Look at what else the same login opens, including email, storage, or billing.
- If sharing is allowed but the login reaches sensitive services, switch to a family seat or separate user account if one is available.
- If sharing is not permitted, consider a plan with separate seats, or a router-based setup for household devices.
