Not through an Apple-documented method. Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions use GarageBand to turn an audio file into a ringtone, while its Voice Memos guide does not show a direct “set as ringtone” option. If you want to use a Voice Memo with Apple’s documented workflow, make the recording available in Files or iCloud, import it into GarageBand, then export and assign it as a ringtone.
Can you set a Voice Memo as a ringtone without GarageBand?
Apple does not document a GarageBand-free way to set a Voice Memo as an iPhone ringtone in iOS 26. Its custom ringtone instructions use GarageBand to import an audio file and export it as a ringtone. The iOS 26 Voice Memos guide covers recording and editing, but not assigning a recording as a ringtone.
This does not establish that no third-party or computer-based workaround exists; Apple’s reviewed instructions simply do not verify or support one. If avoiding GarageBand is essential, treat other methods as unverified and check their current iOS 26 compatibility before relying on them.
What you need for Apple’s documented method
- An iPhone with the Voice Memo you want to use.
- The recording available as an audio file in Files or iCloud, where GarageBand can browse it. Apple’s Voice Memos guide says recordings can sync across signed-in Apple devices when Voice Memos is enabled in iCloud settings; it does not give steps for exporting a recording from Voice Memos to Files.
- GarageBand on the iPhone. Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions use it to import the file, edit the clip, and export the ringtone.
Apple’s instructions do not spell out how to move a Voice Memo into Files. The steps below begin once the recording is accessible there as an audio file.

Make a ringtone from the audio file in GarageBand
- Start a project. Open GarageBand on iPhone and start a new audio recording project.
- Find the audio file. Open Tracks and the Loops Browser, choose Files, then browse for the recording and select it.
- Place and trim the clip. Add the file to the track view and select the section you want. Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions set a maximum length of 30 seconds. If the exported audio is longer, GarageBand can shorten it automatically; you can instead return to the project and trim the clip yourself.
- Export it as a ringtone. Return to My Songs, select the project, choose Share, then Ringtone. Name the tone and export it.
- Choose how to use it. After export, select Standard Ringtone to use it generally, Assign to Contact for one person, or Done to finish without assigning it immediately. GarageBand also offers Standard Text Tone.
These steps follow Apple’s custom-ringtone instructions and its GarageBand for iPhone sharing guide.

To change the general ringtone later, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. You can also assign individual ringtones to contacts. Apple’s guide to tones and ringtones explains these options; Tone Store availability and features vary by region.
