You can browse some Threads content and search for accounts without signing in, according to Meta’s own description of profile-free use. Meta also says that visitors without a profile cannot create posts or interact with content. What Meta has not published is a detailed inventory of what the logged-out search page returns: whether results include full posts or only excerpts, how many appear, how they are ranked, or whether they change by country, browser, or query. Those details have to be checked directly, and the rest of this article explains what can and cannot be established from Meta’s public statements.
What Meta says a visitor without a profile can do
In its description of profile-free use in the EU, Meta says a person who does not have a Threads profile can:
- Browse content on Threads.
- Search for accounts.
- Share content by copying a link or using the platform’s sharing options.
- Report Threads content.
This statement was made in the context of profile-free use in the EU, which Meta announced in a December 2023 update to its original Threads launch post in its Newsroom. Do not assume the same arrangement applies in every country. The statement describes a regional option, not a worldwide guarantee.

Meta’s description is equally specific about the limits. Without a profile, a person cannot create a post and cannot interact with content. That means no likes, replies, reposts, or follows. The description covers those actions in the profile-free experience only; it does not describe what a logged-out page displays in detail.

Keyword search: a dated rollout, not a current guarantee
Meta’s Newsroom said on September 7, 2023 that keyword search was rolling out on mobile and web, in English and Spanish. Argentina, India, Mexico, the UK, and the US were named as examples of where the rollout was happening at that time.
That announcement is a historical rollout note. It does not show that keyword search is available in every country today, and it does not show that keyword search works for people who are not signed in. Treat it as evidence that Meta built search into Threads, not as evidence of what a logged-out visitor will see.

Web features from 2025 describe a signed-in experience
In its April 2025 post about the Threads web experience, Meta described features such as adding columns for favorite searches, profiles, tags, saved and liked posts, activity, and insights. It also described custom feeds.

Meta’s post describes Threads on the web in general and is not a list of what appears on a logged-out search page. If you see a column layout while signed in, that does not tell you the layout a visitor without an account will get.

Fediverse profile search from June 2025
Meta’s June 2025 post said Threads users can search for fediverse profiles. The example given was entering a federated handle and finding the matching profile. The post does not say whether logged-out visitors can run that search or see the same results. Keep the claim scoped to what Meta actually described: a search feature for Threads users.

Most confusion about logged-out Threads search comes from treating three separate things as one. The table below separates them.

What is not established
Meta’s public material does not specify the following for a logged-out search:
Recommended Free Tools
- Whether results include full posts, excerpts, replies, or only matching accounts.
- How many results appear, and how they are ordered.
- Whether results differ by country, browser, session, or search query.
- When, or whether, a login prompt interrupts the search.
Any answer to these questions is an observation from a specific test, and it is only as current as the day it was made. The most recent Meta statement cited here is from June 2025, so anything you find in 2026 should be checked against the live page rather than assumed from these announcements.

How to check the logged-out page yourself
If you need a reliable answer for a specific location, run a repeatable check and record the conditions:
- Open a private or incognito browser window so no Threads session is active. Confirm you are not signed in to Threads or Instagram in that window.
- Note the date, the country you are in, the browser and its version, and the exact search terms you use.
- Go to the Threads web search and enter an account name, then a keyword. Record whether the search box, account results, and post results appear.
- For each result, note whether you see the full post, a preview, or nothing. Note whether any login prompt appears, and at what point.
- Repeat the same steps on another day and in another browser. If results change, your conditions are the reason, and the difference is worth recording.
A single check gives you one observation. Several dated checks across conditions give you a pattern you can describe without overstating it.
A note on automated collection
Readers who want to collect Threads search results with a script or scraper should review Meta’s terms of service and developer policies before doing so. This article does not assess what those terms permit, and nothing here should be read as approval of automated access.
