Yes. You can screenshot a regular WhatsApp Status, and the person who posted it is not sent a screenshot notification, according to an Android Authority reference dated April 24, 2025. That is separate from whether WhatsApp shows the poster that you viewed the Status: viewing information may be available, but a screenshot is not reported as a separate alert. App behavior can change, so this describes the reported behavior as of that reference—not a guarantee about every future version.
What happens when you screenshot a regular Status?
If you can open a regular Status, your phone’s built-in screenshot function can capture what is on screen. The poster does not receive a WhatsApp alert identifying that you took a screenshot, according to Android Authority’s April 24, 2025 reference. That same reference says WhatsApp does not notify users about screenshots of messages, profile pictures, Status updates, or View Once media; however, WhatsApp’s own documentation describes capture protections for some other features. The distinction matters: the app does not apply one universal screenshot rule to everything.
A screenshot is also different from a view. The person who posted a Status may be able to see that you viewed it when viewer information is available. That does not mean WhatsApp tells them you saved an image of it. Do not treat the lack of a screenshot alert as a way to view someone’s Status invisibly.

Why Status, Profile Photo, and View Once behave differently
WhatsApp’s screenshot protections are feature-specific. Its Help Center says screenshots of profile photos are blocked to help protect privacy, and its View Once guidance says recipients cannot take screenshots of that content in WhatsApp. Those protections do not establish that ordinary Status updates are blocked. The practical differences are:

These are not interchangeable privacy settings. Choosing View Once in a chat does not turn a Status into View Once media, and the profile-photo screenshot restriction is not evidence that screenshots of every WhatsApp screen are blocked. WhatsApp’s help guidance documents protections for profile photos and View Once items; it does not document a screenshot block for ordinary Status updates.
How long a Status lasts—and what expiry does not do
Meta says every Status disappears after 24 hours and may contain photos, videos, GIFs, text, and more. WhatsApp also describes Status as end-to-end encrypted while it is shared through the service. Encryption protects the content in transit and within WhatsApp’s sharing system; it does not prevent a recipient who can view the content from making an independent copy of what appears on their screen.

When the 24-hour window ends, the Status is no longer available in WhatsApp’s normal viewing window. That expiry cannot remove a screenshot, screen recording, or photo or video made with a second device while the Status was visible. A disappearing post should therefore be understood as temporary availability in WhatsApp, not as a guarantee that every viewer-held copy disappears too.
How to limit who can view your Status
If you are posting, audience selection is the first-party control WhatsApp provides for Status privacy. Set it before sharing content you do not want all of your contacts to see. WhatsApp offers three choices:
- My contacts: Share with your contacts.
- My contacts except: Exclude selected contacts.
- Only share with: Choose the contacts who can see the Status.
The exact route to these controls can differ with the app interface and operating system. Look for Status privacy in WhatsApp’s Status controls before publishing, then confirm the selected audience rather than assuming an earlier choice still fits. Audience settings reduce who can open a Status; they do not prevent an allowed viewer from capturing it on another device.

WhatsApp also supports mentioning people or groups in a Status. Mentioned people receive a private notification and can reshare the Status to their own audience. Consider that possible onward sharing when deciding whether to mention someone or include content intended only for a small circle.
What to do if the content is sensitive
Choose the sharing format for the sensitivity of the material, not just for how long you want it to remain visible. For a Status, limit the audience and avoid posting anything you would not want a viewer to retain. If you need stronger in-app capture controls for a one-time item sent to one chat recipient, WhatsApp’s View Once feature is the closer fit: WhatsApp says the recipient cannot take a screenshot of View Once content in the app.
That protection has a boundary. WhatsApp warns that someone may still use another device to photograph or record what is displayed. No in-app screenshot block can guarantee that a person who can see content will not reproduce it with an external camera or another method. View Once is a capture deterrent within WhatsApp, not a promise that content cannot be copied at all.

Common misunderstandings
- “No alert means the poster cannot tell I viewed it.” Not necessarily. A view and a screenshot are separate events; viewer information may be available even though the screenshot is not reported as an alert.
- “Status disappears, so a screenshot disappears too.” No. The 24-hour limit governs WhatsApp’s Status viewing window, not copies someone already saved outside that window.
- “WhatsApp blocks screenshots, so it blocks every screenshot.” The official protections described here concern profile photos and View Once media. They should not be generalized to regular Status updates.
- “View Once makes copying impossible.” It blocks in-app screenshots according to WhatsApp, but another device can capture the visible screen.
Practical troubleshooting
You cannot capture the screen
Check whether you are viewing a regular Status, a profile photo, or View Once media. WhatsApp documents screenshot restrictions for the latter two in supported cases; regular Status is the feature for which screenshot capture is reported as possible. Your device’s screenshot controls also depend on its operating system and model, so use the device’s own instructions if the normal shortcut does not work.
You are unsure whether a screenshot alert was sent
For regular Status, the April 24, 2025 Android Authority reference reports that no screenshot notification is sent. Do not infer from this that WhatsApp can never change its behavior or that a view is invisible. Check current WhatsApp guidance if the app’s behavior appears different after an update.

You need to prevent a particular person from seeing a future Status
Change the Status audience before posting, using My contacts, My contacts except, or Only share with. Audience controls apply to who can view the Status; they do not recall copies that may already have been captured or forwarded.
