Sometimes, but the safest answer depends on the fan and how you are using it. Electrical Safety First, a UK consumer safety organization, advises against leaving electric fans running overnight or when a home is empty. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency gives a narrower warning for older box fans used in do-it-yourself air cleaners: do not leave a pre-2012 fan in that setup unattended or running while you sleep. Neither position establishes that every box fan is unsafe overnight—or that any fan is risk-free. Check the manual for your model, and do not run a damaged or malfunctioning fan.
What the overnight safety guidance actually says
General electric-fan advice
Electrical Safety First recommends not leaving an electric fan running overnight or while the home is empty. This is UK consumer safety advice, not a universal legal rule. It also recommends placing a fan where it cannot be knocked over, keeping its cable away from children and pets, and inspecting stored fans and cables for damage. If a fan smells burnt or makes an unusual noise, unplug it.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported in a 2003 assessment that portable electric fans were associated with an estimated 4,500 residential fires from 1990 through 1998, more than 20 deaths, 270 injuries, and about $55 million in property losses. These are historical estimates covering portable electric fans broadly—not box fans alone—and should not be read as a current annual rate. CPSC’s Assessment of Portable Electric Fans
Box fans used as DIY air cleaners
Using a box fan with a filter attached to clean air is a different use from ordinary cooling. EPA says Chemical Insights Research Institute of UL tested five box-fan models in filtered DIY-air-cleaner configurations, including clean and smoke- or dust-loaded filters. One extreme test blocked both the front and back of a fan for seven hours. EPA reports that fan-component temperatures stayed below recognized temperature safety standards and that no tested scenario showed an observable fire hazard.
#1 Best Overall
- CUSTOMIZABLE AIRFLOW: Choose from three speed settings (low, medium, high) to tailor the blowing speed to your comfort level.
- PORTABILITY AND LIGHTWEIGHT: Weighing just 5.8 pounds and equipped with a convenient carrying handle at the top, this fan is effortlessly portable, enabling you to move it between rooms to fulfill cooling or ventilation needs in various spaces such as bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, and home offices.
- STABILITY: Engineered with a free-standing design and extra-large feet, this fan ensures stability during operation, preventing tipping or wobbling.
- DIMENSIONS: 6.8"D x 20.86"W x 21.33"H
That is reassuring for the tested fans and configurations, but it does not prove that every fan, filter arrangement, age, or operating condition is safe. EPA specifically advises against using a pre-2012 box fan in a DIY air cleaner unattended or while sleeping. Its recommendations also include using a newer fan (2012 or later) with third-party UL 507 or equivalent verification, following the manufacturer’s instructions, not using a damaged or malfunctioning fan or an extension cord, and maintaining working smoke detectors throughout the home. Check the filter daily during smoke events and replace it when it becomes dark or smells of smoke. These age-specific instructions concern filtered DIY air cleaners; they are not a blanket rule for every box fan used for cooling. EPA’s research on DIY air cleaners
How to decide about your fan
Before leaving a box fan running, use these checks rather than relying on a general assurance:
Rank #2
- Floor fan: Genesis 20” high velocity box fan can conveniently rest on any flat surface, making it appropriate for use all around the home.
- Durable & lightweight: our high velocity fan features a durable Copper motor which provides a super strong fan speed and is built for overall long lasting performance
- Three powerful fan speeds: Genesis high velocity fan features 3 energy efficient speed settings & a durable motor that provides strong performance no matter the weather
- Sleek & stylish design: this high velocity fan features a sleek & stylish design that is neutral & won't clash with your decor no matter the environment. Use it anywhere
- Read the exact model’s manual. Follow its limits for continuous operation, placement, and cleaning.
- Inspect the fan. Do not use it if the cord, plug, housing, or grille is damaged, or if it behaves abnormally.
- Set it up securely. Place it on a stable surface where it cannot be knocked over; keep it clear of water, loose fabric, and anything that could block airflow.
- Keep the cable clear. Route it where people, children, and pets will not pull or trip over it.
- Stop at warning signs. Unplug the fan if it smells burnt or makes unusual noises.
- Apply the right guidance to the right use. If the fan has a filter attached as a DIY air cleaner, follow EPA’s additional precautions, including its warning about pre-2012 fans during sleep or unattended operation.
Working smoke alarms are sensible home protection, but they do not make damaged equipment or an unsafe setup acceptable. For general overnight use, the conservative choice is to switch the fan off when you go to bed or leave home, consistent with Electrical Safety First’s advice.

Use the fan’s rated wattage, or measure its draw, for the most useful estimate. Electrical Safety First gives a general range of 15–100 watts for electric fans depending on type and speed; it is not a measured range for every box fan. The calculation is:

Energy (kWh) = watts × hours ÷ 1,000
For an eight-hour night, 15–100 watts works out to 0.12–0.8 kWh. That is arithmetic using the general electric-fan range, not a measurement of a particular box fan. To estimate the cost, multiply the result by your electricity price per kWh. For example, if the fan’s actual draw is 50 watts, eight hours uses 0.4 kWh; multiply 0.4 by your local per-kWh rate to get the cost.
Fan speed and model affect power use, and electricity rates vary by location. The published general range is from Electrical Safety First’s electric-fan safety advice.

If you are using a filter for smoke, treat it as a separate setup
A filter attached to a box fan is intended for air cleaning, not ordinary cooling. EPA’s findings and precautions apply to DIY air-cleaner configurations, so do not assume a filter is a universal fan accessory or that the test results establish performance or safety for every arrangement. In smoke conditions, follow EPA’s instructions for the setup and monitor the filter as it loads with particles; EPA notes that a dirty filter can make a DIY unit almost ineffective.
