Yes, but only on a limited set of Chromebooks. Google offers Steam for Chromebook (Beta), which installs Steam games directly on selected models through a Steam installer app. Whether your Chromebook qualifies depends on its exact model or codename, not only on its specifications. Google’s help page, Play Steam for Chromebook (Beta), was checked in October 2026 and still describes the feature as beta. This guide explains how to confirm eligibility, install Steam, tune performance, and decide whether your current or next Chromebook is a good fit.
What Google’s beta actually offers
Steam for Chromebook is a beta program. Google says it is still in development, so it is not the same as a finished, fully supported Steam client on Windows or macOS. Expect bugs, uneven performance, and a game library that may not match what you see on a gaming PC. The supported-device list is also subject to change as Google adds models.
The help page does not publish a release date or a country-by-country eligibility statement in the material reviewed, so availability in your region should be confirmed on the same page before you buy or install anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHardware minimums
Google’s stated minimums are the starting point for any Chromebook. Meeting them is necessary but not sufficient: the device must also appear by name on Google’s supported list.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
| Requirement | Google’s stated minimum | How to check it on ChromeOS |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | At least an Intel Core i3 or AMD Ryzen 3 class CPU | Press Ctrl + Search + Esc, as Google’s help page directs, and read the processor details |
| Memory (RAM) | 8 GB | Use the same Ctrl + Search + Esc check |
| Storage | 128 GB | Go to Settings → Device → Storage Management |
A quick note on the CPU row: the minimum is stated as Intel i3 or Ryzen 3, so an older or lower-tier processor that falls below that level is outside the stated requirement even if it runs ChromeOS well.
Which Chromebooks are on the supported list
Google’s current list is organized by manufacturer and by model name, and in several cases by codename. Match your device’s exact name against the list, because a sibling model from the same brand may not be included. The following entries are taken from Google’s help page as checked in October 2026.

How to check your device and install Steam
Work through these steps in order. If the installer does not appear at step 4, stop there: Google says that means the device does not meet the beta requirements.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Identify your exact model name or codename. Check the label on the device, the ChromeOS settings page, or your purchase record.
- Confirm the CPU and RAM with Ctrl + Search + Esc, and confirm storage in Settings → Device → Storage Management.
- Compare the model name against the supported list above or on Google’s help page.
- Open the Launcher, search for Steam installer, and select the result under Apps.
- Follow the installer prompts, then sign in to Steam and start a game. Confirm that the game launches and that the window size and position look correct before you rely on it for long sessions.
Why not install Steam from the Play Store
Google does not recommend installing Steam or Steam Link from the Play Store on a Chromebook. The company says those versions can cause performance issues. Use the Steam installer described above instead, even if a Play Store listing appears in search results.
Performance settings to try first
Google’s guidance for improving playability is practical rather than technical:
- Lower the display resolution. The advice is most relevant on screens above 1920 × 1080. Lowering resolution is the single biggest trade-off between sharpness and frame rate.
- Close background apps and websites. Other windows compete for the same CPU, memory, and battery budget.
- Start with medium or low graphics settings. Raise them only after you have confirmed the game runs smoothly.
These are Google’s recommendations for the beta; they are not benchmark results, and Google does not publish comparative frame rates for listed devices.

Known issues to expect
Google’s help page documents several recurring problems. Knowing them in advance helps you tell a normal beta limitation from a setup mistake.

Some titles can open at an unexpected scale or offset on the screen. Adjusting resolution, as above, is the first thing to try.
Vulkan shader processing messages
You may see a notice about Vulkan shader processing. Google says that skipping it can affect gameplay. Allowing background shader processing may reduce battery life, so plan for that trade-off when you are away from a charger.

How to decide whether a Chromebook is a good fit
Use five checks before you commit to Steam on a Chromebook:
- Model match: Your exact model or codename appears on Google’s supported list.
- Hardware floor: The CPU, RAM, and storage meet the stated minimums.
- Display tolerance: You are willing to lower resolution, especially on a high-resolution screen.
- Game fit: The titles you want appear on Google’s tested list, or you are prepared to check their compatibility separately.
- Beta tolerance: You accept a beta with known bugs and variable performance.
If you fail the first check, the Steam installer will not appear and you have no beta path on that device. If you fail the last check, a Chromebook is still usable for many Steam titles, but a dedicated Windows PC will give you a steadier experience.
If you are buying a Chromebook for Steam
If you need a new device, start with models on Google’s list and then confirm the exact configuration matches the minimum CPU, RAM, and storage. Retail listings often differ by configuration within the same product name, so verify the specifications on the product page before purchase. Google’s list may also change, so check it again on the day you buy.
