Not directly. Google Drive can store your podcast recording, but YouTube Live needs an encoder or streaming service to read the media and send a live feed to your channel. You can make the Drive file available to a suitable encoder, then connect that encoder to YouTube with the stream URL and key. YouTube’s published setup guidance does not describe Drive itself as a native live-stream input.

What Google Drive can—and cannot—do

Drive is a place to store and share the source file; it does not, by itself, turn that file into a YouTube live broadcast. YouTube describes an encoder as the component that converts video into a digital format and sends it to YouTube. An encoder may be software or standalone hardware. YouTube’s encoder guidance also lists a cloud service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos, but that listing does not establish a Google Drive connection or endorse a particular integration.

Choose an encoder or service that explicitly supports playing prerecorded media and can access your file. If it requires a local file, download or sync the recording from Drive to the computer running the encoder. Do not assume that an encoder can fetch a Drive file directly: check its current documentation for that specific workflow.

How to stream a Drive podcast recording through an encoder

  1. Check live-stream eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s access before planning the broadcast using YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
  2. Make the file accessible to the encoder. Confirm that the chosen software or service supports prerecorded-media playback. If it needs a local file, download or sync the recording from Drive to the machine that will run it. Confirm that the file’s format is supported by the encoder.
  3. Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or schedule one if you want an advance watch page and the option for viewers to receive reminders. Follow YouTube’s scheduling guidance.
  4. Connect the encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the YouTube event into the corresponding fields in the encoder. The stream key directs the encoder’s feed to the right destination; treat it like a credential and do not share it publicly. YouTube outlines this setup in its encoder instructions.
  5. Start early and check the preview. Start the encoder before the planned event time. In YouTube’s Live Control Room, check the incoming preview, picture, sound and stream health before starting the event. Keep an eye on the feed during the broadcast.
  6. Start the event in YouTube Studio. Once the preview is working and you are ready for viewers, start the live event using the controls in Live Control Room.

Preflight checks that prevent avoidable problems

  • Upload capacity: Make sure the internet connection has sufficient upload capacity for the encoder’s outgoing feed. YouTube recommends preparing and testing the connection ahead of time; see its streaming tips.
  • Audio and picture: Listen to the preview and check the video before going live. Continue monitoring them during the event so you can catch a muted track, frozen picture or interrupted feed.
  • Source access: Check that the encoder can still read the file for the full broadcast. A file that is only available through a temporary or restricted link may not work with a service that needs continuous access.
  • Rights: Clear the podcast recording and every included song, guest contribution, clip and other element for the intended live broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the content provider.

Do you need a hardware encoder?

No. YouTube supports software encoders as well as standalone hardware. It recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but a dedicated device is not a requirement for a prerecorded podcast. If considering hardware, confirm that the exact model can handle your source file and intended workflow; YouTube’s cited guidance does not identify a particular model as a direct Google Drive reader.
