How much does it cost to replace a phone battery?
There is no single current price that applies to all phones. The European Commission’s 2023 impact assessment reported OEM smartphone battery-replacement costs of €10–€78 in the underlying analysis. That is historical study data, not a current retail quote, an average, or a promise about what a repair will cost in your country.
For an actual price, ask the manufacturer or a repairer for a written quote for your exact model. Apple’s US battery-service page provides a model-specific estimate; Apple says the final fee can change after inspection, tax may apply, and shipping may be added. Which repair route should you choose?

Manufacturer or authorized service
Apple says battery service is provided without extra charge under AppleCare when battery capacity drops below 80%. Eligibility and actual cost can depend on the device, coverage, location and inspection. Do not assume Apple’s terms apply to other brands. Apple says it guarantees its service and replacement parts for 90 days or the remaining Apple warranty term, whichever is longer.
Independent repair
A local professional may offer a different price or service arrangement. Ask for the quote and warranty in writing, and verify that the shop will use a battery compatible with your exact model. For EU consumers, repair rights may also apply to products covered by the relevant reparability requirements; the rules are not worldwide and do not mean every repair is free.

DIY replacement
Before ordering a battery or kit, find the phone’s exact model number—not just its product family—and check that the battery, tools and instructions explicitly support it. EU smartphone ecodesign provisions and Commission guidance address spare parts, repair information and tools, but that does not verify any particular kit or seller.

Is replacing the battery cheaper than buying another phone?
It can be, but the answer depends on a repair quote and the cost of a replacement phone of the same model in your market. Compare the total repair price with the phone’s condition and remaining software support. The available evidence does not quantify typical savings, so avoid treating the historical €10–€78 Commission range as proof that a repair will be cheaper for your phone.

If the phone has other damage or is nearing the end of useful software support, include those factors in the decision. Request an inspection-based quote before committing if the repairer says the price may change after opening the device.

As of 31 July 2026, EU right-to-repair rules apply. The European Commission says consumers can request repair of products that are technically repairable under EU law; covered repairs must be free or at a reasonable price and completed within a reasonable timeframe. If a consumer chooses repair during the liability period, the legal guarantee is extended by at least 12 months. These rights apply in the EU and their application depends on the product and relevant requirements. See the European Commission’s summary of the right-to-repair rules.
Separately, EU smartphone ecodesign rules cover repairability and spare parts. Commission guidance points consumers to supplier websites for spare-part and repair-tool prices and to a product’s EPREL page.
