Yes—but the headline refers to Storj’s 2015 DriveShare proposal, not a verified description of its current service. Storj now has Storage Node Services governed by current operator terms: running a node requires dedicated hardware, substantial monthly bandwidth, and reliable availability, while compensation depends on actual space and bandwidth used. It is not a guaranteed way to earn money from an idle drive.
What the “rent out your hard drive” headline meant
Computerworld’s January 13, 2015 report described Storj’s DriveShare concept: people could offer unused hard-drive capacity to a peer-to-peer network for storing other users’ data. The historical proposal said files would be split into shards, encrypted, and distributed among participating nodes. Those are details of the 2015 concept, not confirmation of how Storj’s current service works. Computerworld’s 2015 report attributed this description to Storj: “Since all this is happening in an automatic, encrypted fashion, we see the situation for the [user] as similar to someone running a Tor relay.” That was company language about the proposal, not independent verification of current security.
Today’s relevant offering is Storj Storage Node Services. Under Storj’s node operator terms, an operator gives Storj and its customers access to node storage space and bandwidth according to parameters configured in the node software. Treat the DriveShare headline and current node operation as distinct things.

Storj’s node operator terms, updated September 25, 2026, set these published minimums for each node:
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
| Requirement | Minimum in the terms |
|---|---|
| Storage hardware | At least one hard drive dedicated to each node |
| Processor | At least one dedicated processor core per node |
| Available storage | 500 GB per node |
| Monthly bandwidth | 2 TB |
| Network speed | 5 Mbps upstream and 25 Mbps downstream |
| Availability | 99.3% monthly |
These are contractual minimums published in terms updated on that date, not estimates of what a typical home connection will achieve. Operators are also responsible for following Storj’s applicable documentation and technical requirements. Check the live terms and documentation before setting up a node, since requirements can change.
The dedicated-drive rule makes a hard drive relevant, but it does not mean you must buy a new one if you already have suitable hardware. Nor do the requirements establish that buying a larger drive will lead to enough usage to recover its cost. A 4 TB drive, for example, is an optional capacity choice—not Storj’s minimum and not a guarantee of utilization or profit.

How payment works—and why fees are not profit
The current terms say Storj calculates node fees based on storage space and bandwidth used. They do not establish a typical home-node utilization rate or reliable net-earnings figure. Actual results cannot be inferred from the minimum capacity or the mere fact that a node is online.

Under those terms, fees are denominated in USDC, a U.S.-dollar-denominated stablecoin issued by a third party on Ethereum. Operators must provide a valid ERC-20-compatible Ethereum wallet address, Storj controls payout timing at its discretion, and operators are responsible for applicable taxes.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac

The terms also hold back part of fees accrued during the first nine months:
| Operating period | Share of accrued fees held back |
|---|---|
| Months 1–3 | 75% |
| Months 4–6 | 50% |
| Months 7–9 | 25% |
Half of the held amount is released after 15 consecutive months of active storage without breach or interruption. The other half depends on meeting that duration requirement and completing a qualifying graceful exit. The terms say that stopping operation before the duration release forfeits the held amount. As a result, accrued usage fees are not necessarily immediately withdrawable.

Payment arrangements can change. In a September 25, 2026 official community announcement, Storj said the October payout would be made in USDC rather than STORJ, starting October 9, and identified September as the last STORJ payout. The announcement also said USDC deposits were enabled for customers after the change announcement.

How to decide whether running a node makes sense
Consider the practical costs and constraints before dedicating a machine and drive. The usage-based fee formula alone cannot tell you whether a node will cover those costs.
Best Value
- [Upgraded Version] - This external hard drive features a mirrored logo stripe combined with a striped anti-slip design, and the rounded corners of the casing make it easier to grip. The stripes also have a heat dissipation function, ensuring stable and fast data transfer.
- 【Ultra-thin and quiet】 - The motherboard adopts JMicron 578 noise-free solution, giving you a quiet working environment. Lightweight and portable size designed to fit in your pocket for easy portability.
- 【Ultra-Fast Data Transfers】 - Pairing this external hard drive with JMicron 578 solution USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 interfaces enables blazing-fast data transfer. It boasts theoretical read speeds of up to 125MB/s and write speeds of up to 103MB/s.
- 【Plug and Play】 - With no software to install, just plug it in and the drive is ready to use.The hard disk chip is wrapped with an aluminum anti-interference layer to increase heat dissipation and protect data.
- 【What You Get】 - 1 x Portable Hard Drive, 1 x USB 3.0 Cable, 1 x User Manual, Gift-type shell packaging ,Three-year manufacturer's warranty and free technical support services.
- Hardware: A dedicated drive and processor core are required for each node under the terms. Account for any purchase or replacement cost rather than assuming an existing drive is automatically suitable.
- Internet service: Compare your connection and data allowance with the published bandwidth and speed requirements. Check whether your internet provider permits this kind of sustained use.
- Availability: Assess whether your power, network, and storage setup can meet the monthly availability threshold and keep operating over time.
- Costs and payments: Consider electricity, internet, hardware, applicable taxes, USDC handling, payout timing, and the holdback conditions. The terms do not establish typical net income after these expenses.
For any storage-node opportunity, compare dedicated hardware and free-capacity requirements, bandwidth and uptime demands, actual utilization rather than headline rates, payment currency and release terms, and operating costs. The available terms do not support a reliable earnings comparison with other providers or ordinary cloud storage.
