Yes. Camtasia has a Background Removal effect that isolates a person or main object in camera footage. You don’t need a green screen. It is built for camera recordings, though, and TechSmith says it doesn’t work as intended on screen recordings or on clips you’ve already cropped or trimmed.
What the effect does
TechSmith describes Background Removal as able to remove complex or multicolor backgrounds without a green screen. It works best with one person or one primary object in the frame. Its AI detection is tuned for live camera footage with a person in view.
TechSmith Support puts the scope plainly (article updated May 21, 2026): “The background removal tool in Camtasia is specifically designed to remove backgrounds from camera recordings.”

The feature first appeared as an AI background-removal beta in the Camtasia 2023 release notes for Windows.

How to use it on camera footage
This is TechSmith’s documented workflow. I haven’t tested it myself.
- Record or import the camera footage as its own clip.
- Add the clip to the timeline and apply the Background Removal effect to it.
- Place the isolated subject over your screen content or another background.
- If you’re combining a webcam with a screen recording, apply the effect to the separate camera clip before you combine the two.
Apply the effect to the original, uncropped, untrimmed clip. Cropping or trimming first is one of the cases where TechSmith says it breaks down.

When it won’t work well
- Screen recordings. The effect doesn’t work as intended on them, even when the screen background is plain or a solid color.
- Cropped or trimmed recordings. Applying the effect after cropping or trimming gives unreliable results.
- Other non-camera content. It may not behave as expected on anything that isn’t camera footage.
Choosing an approach

Mac and Windows differences
TechSmith’s AI technology disclosure lists MODNet for background removal in Camtasia on Windows. On Mac it lists Apple Person Segmentation. Both are listed as running on the device, and the data isn’t used for training. That describes this AI capability only. It doesn’t mean every Camtasia feature or service runs locally.

- Version 2026.0.4 (March 10, 2026) fixed background removal not rendering correctly.
- Version 2026.1.3 (June 11, 2026) fixed an issue that could prevent the effect’s opacity and blur properties from being changed.
As of its September 22, 2026 update, the page lists 2026.2.2 as the latest entry. If the effect renders wrongly or its settings won’t change, update Camtasia. Then check the release history for your platform and installed version.
