If you have a sealed all-in-one (AIO) liquid CPU cooler, you generally should not refill it: the manufacturers covered here describe these coolers as closed systems not intended to be drained or refilled. First identify your cooler’s exact type and model. A custom liquid-cooling loop is different, and its service procedure depends on its manufacturer’s instructions.
First, identify which kind of liquid cooler you have
A sealed AIO combines the pump, radiator, tubing, and CPU block into a factory-assembled unit. CORSAIR says its loop is sealed at the factory, while NZXT says Kraken coolers are not designed to be drained or refilled. ARCTIC makes the same point for the Liquid Freezer II 280: its water loop is sealed and does not need water or additives refilled. These statements apply to the named products and guidance, not every liquid-cooling setup.
A custom loop is a separate configuration. The manufacturer sources reviewed here do not establish a fill or service procedure for a particular custom loop. Check the exact components’ official manuals and use only a procedure they authorize; do not apply AIO advice as if it were custom-loop guidance.

Why refilling a sealed AIO is not the fix
Opening a sealed cooler can damage it and may affect warranty coverage. NZXT specifically says opening a Kraken to drain or clean it is not covered by its limited warranty, and its guide says that opening the unit will not resolve a blockage. Warranty terms vary by manufacturer and model, so check the applicable terms before any invasive work.
#1 Best Overall
- CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
- NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
- INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
- INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard
If temperatures have risen, diagnose the accessible causes first: dust-restricted airflow, a fan or pump connection, pump operation, or poor mounting can all merit checking. If those checks point to an internal failure, contact the manufacturer or consider a compatible replacement rather than opening the sealed coolant loop.
Clean dust from the radiator and fans
Dust can obstruct airflow through the radiator and reduce cooling performance. CORSAIR recommends keeping the radiator and fans clear of dust. Its suggested schedule is every 2–3 months for dusty, pet-owning, or smoking environments, and twice yearly in a relatively dust-free environment. Treat those as CORSAIR’s examples, not a universal maintenance interval.

- Simple, High-Performance All-in-One CPU Cooling: Renowned CORSAIR engineering delivers strong, low-noise cooling that helps your CPU reach its full potential
- Efficient, Low-Noise Pump: Keeps your coolant circulating at a high flow rate while generating a whisper-quiet 20 dBA
- Convex Cold Plate with Pre-Applied Thermal Paste: The slightly convex shape ensures maximum contact with your CPU’s integrated heat spreader, with thermal paste applied in an optimised pattern to speed up installation
- RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
- Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
- Shut down the PC and follow the computer and cooler manuals before handling components.
- Remove dust from the radiator fins and fan blades using an appropriate compressed-air duster, following the equipment instructions. Avoid opening the coolant loop.
- If cleaning requires removing the cooler block or radiator, follow the exact model’s installation and cleaning procedure. CORSAIR’s detailed guide includes disconnecting cables, removing parts for cleaning, then reinstalling the cooler with fresh CPU thermal paste before refitting the block.
Thermal paste is needed only if the block is removed and reinstalled according to the model procedure. It is not coolant and cannot repair a sealed-loop problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot cooling problems before replacing the cooler
NZXT’s Kraken troubleshooting guide recommends checking the following. Its temperature thresholds and interpretations are guidance for that product line, not universal diagnostic limits.

- ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load

- Temperature at idle: Check the BIOS idle temperature. NZXT labels a reading above 70°C a strong sign of a cooler problem and above 75°C suggestive of a blockage.
- Pump connection and RPM: Confirm the pump is connected as the cooler’s instructions specify and check whether its RPM is reported as expected.
- Mounting and contact: Verify the block is mounted correctly and has appropriate contact with the CPU.
- Fan operation and radiator dust: Check that the fans run and that dust is not obstructing the radiator.
- Tube temperature difference: NZXT says a major difference between the tubes can suggest a blockage. Treat this as a clue in its Kraken guidance, not a definitive test for every cooler.
When support or replacement makes sense
If the checks above do not resolve the problem, contact the cooler maker with the exact model and symptoms, and confirm warranty coverage before attempting repairs. If the manufacturer’s diagnosis indicates internal failure, replacement may be the appropriate route. Before choosing a replacement AIO, verify CPU socket compatibility and that the case supports the radiator size and installation position; the model-specific manual and case specifications determine fit.
