Sometimes—but recovery from an SSD is uncertain. When you delete a file, the file system marks its space as available. If the operating system and storage device support TRIM, the system can also notify the SSD that those data ranges are no longer needed. That lets the SSD reclaim or reuse them, so conventional undelete scans may find nothing. TRIM does not prove that every deleted file is erased immediately.

What happens when you delete a file from an SSD?

Deletion first changes the file system’s records: the space occupied by the file is marked as free. On a supported setup, the operating system may then send a TRIM, delete-notification, or unmap hint to the SSD, identifying ranges that no longer need to be preserved. Microsoft describes this notification in its TRIM documentation.

An SSD stores data in flash memory, which must be erased in larger blocks than the small units in which files are commonly changed. The drive manages that storage work separately from the file system’s act of deleting a file. A TRIM hint permits the SSD to purge or reuse notified ranges; it does not establish that every drive immediately wipes every deleted block. Timing and behavior can vary with the operating system, file system, connection, controller, and drive firmware. Microsoft’s storage TRIM overview explains the device-level process.

Why undelete software may find nothing

Traditional undelete tools look for file data that remains in storage after its file-system entry is removed. On an SSD, the operating system may have already notified the drive that the space is free, and the drive may have reclaimed or reused it. Continued computer use can also write to free space that might otherwise still contain recoverable data. Microsoft warns that free space may have been overwritten, especially on an SSD, in its Windows File Recovery guidance.

This explains why a scan can return no usable files, but it is not proof that every SSD deletion is instantly unrecoverable or that every recovery application always fails. There is no dependable recovery percentage or fixed TRIM wipe interval established here.

What to do after deleting an important file

  1. Reduce use of the affected computer. Stop unnecessary activity as soon as practical to reduce writes to free space. This can limit further overwriting, but cannot reverse storage cleanup that may already have happened.
  2. Check backups and version history. Look for an existing backup or an earlier copy before trying a scan. Windows File History can restore previous versions if it was set up to back up the relevant files; see Microsoft’s File History instructions.
  3. If appropriate, try Windows File Recovery. Microsoft recommends Regular mode for recent deletions on NTFS and Extensive mode for older NTFS deletions, formatting, corruption, and non-NTFS file systems. Follow Microsoft’s mode and command instructions; the tool does not recover data from cloud storage or network file shares.
  4. Save recovered files to a different drive. Do not write recovered files back to the SSD you are trying to recover from. Microsoft requires a different destination drive for Windows File Recovery.
  5. Set expectations. A scan may locate files, but neither Windows File Recovery nor another undelete tool can guarantee recovery if the relevant data have already been overwritten or reclaimed.

Which recovery path makes sense?

Situation Best next step Important limit
A backup or File History copy predates deletion Restore from that copy. File History helps only if it was configured to include the files before they were deleted.
Recent deletion on an NTFS drive, with no backup Consider Windows File Recovery Regular mode. Recovery is not guaranteed; ongoing use may overwrite free space.
Older NTFS deletion, formatting, corruption, or a non-NTFS file system Consider Windows File Recovery Extensive mode. Use a different destination drive; success is not assured.
Files stored in cloud storage or on a network share Check the service’s own recovery or version-history options. Windows File Recovery does not recover cloud-storage or network-share data.

How to make SSD file loss less likely next time

Keep a backup that is separate from the laptop, and check that it includes the files you care about. Windows File History can use an external drive as its backup destination, as Microsoft explains in its backup and restore instructions. A backup made before deletion can provide a more dependable recovery route than relying on an undelete scan; it cannot restore data that have already been purged unless a copy exists in that backup.
