Usually, no. Discord says a message you manually delete is no longer stored on Discord and will not appear in your account’s Data Package. The export can show messages still represented in your account record, but it cannot restore deleted text. A server logging bot may preserve messages going forward only if it had access to them before deletion.
Can you see deleted messages on Discord?
Discord does not provide an end-user undelete feature for messages. Its support article on the Data Package states: “If you manually delete a message – it is no longer stored in Discord and therefore will not be included in your Data Package.” The same limitation applies when another user deletes a message: if no lawful server-side record was made before deletion, Discord’s published guidance does not establish a way for you to restore it.

Discord says deleted content is no longer available to other users and is deleted from its systems, subject to limited retention exceptions for legal, safety, and security purposes. Those exceptions do not create a user-facing restoration route. Discord also notes that cached uploads may take time to clear; that is not a supported way to recover message text or attachments. Discord’s information-retention explanation describes these limits.
Will your Discord Data Package include deleted messages?
No. The Data Package is an account-data export, not a message recovery tool. Discord says its ZIP includes a Messages folder with messages the account holder has sent, arranged by direct messages, group messages, and channels. JSON records may include a message ID, timestamp, content, and attachment links, but manually deleted messages are excluded.

To request the package, open User Settings → Data & Privacy → Request all of my Data and follow the prompts. Discord says delivery may take within 30 days; once available, the download link remains active for 30 days. These are service timing periods, not a recovery grace period. If your account is disabled or deleted before the link arrives, Discord says the request is canceled. See Your Discord Data Package for current instructions.
Discord also describes retention of some safety-related information for up to two years for accounts reported or flagged for Terms of Service or Community Guidelines violations, and retention of certain information such as email addresses and phone numbers for 180 days after deletion. Those periods concern limited trust-and-safety data; they do not mean deleted message text is available to account holders.

What are your options for a missing message?
| Option | Useful for | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Request your Data Package | Reviewing messages still represented in your account export. | It does not include manually deleted messages or restore them. |
| Check existing evidence | Finding a screenshot, notification, quote, or attachment already saved by you or another participant. | It cannot recreate content nobody preserved. |
| Use a server logger configured in advance | Keeping a record of messages the bot could access before deletion in that server. | It cannot fetch messages deleted before it was installed, configured, or able to read them. |
| Report a safety or policy issue | Bringing an incident to Discord’s attention through its reporting or support routes. | Discord’s published material does not promise staff can restore deleted content. |
If the missing message matters for a safety or policy report, preserve evidence you already have and use Discord’s support request form or the appropriate reporting flow. Do not assume that a report will recover the text.
Can a bot recover deleted Discord messages?
A bot is a prospective logger, not a recovery service. It can only record content it receives while the message exists and while the bot is installed and configured with the necessary access. A bot added after a message was deleted cannot retrieve that old content from Discord.

Reading message content is not unrestricted. Discord classifies Message Content as a privileged intent, which controls access to message content, embeds, attachments, and components. Discord’s developer guidance says apps should enable a privileged intent only when the use case needs it and complies with its Developer Policy. Discord’s privileged-intents documentation explains the requirement.
As of Discord’s June 2026 developer guidance, apps under 10,000 users may enable privileged intents in the Developer Portal; apps at the 10,000-user threshold are subject to review for continued access. Discord says the owner is notified at the threshold and has 90 days to apply, with annual reapplication described for continued access. Policies can change, so developers should confirm the current rules in the Discord Developer changelog and Developer Portal before relying on access. Discord’s June 2026 developer announcement also describes stronger app-data protections and points developers toward interaction features such as slash commands when reading message content is unnecessary.

What server owners should check before enabling logging
A logger creates another stored copy of users’ messages. Before installing one, review its permissions and data practices rather than treating logging as a harmless toggle.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Permissions: Confirm what server and channel access the app requests, and limit it to what the logging purpose requires.
- Message-content access: Check whether it actually has the access needed to capture message content under Discord’s current developer rules.
- Privacy policy and retention: Find out what content is stored, where it is kept, how long it remains, and whether it is shared.
- Access controls: Restrict who can view logs, especially when messages may contain personal or sensitive information.
- Deletion process: Understand how you can remove retained records and what happens when the bot is removed or the server closes.
- Notice and expectations: Consider whether members should be told that deleted messages may remain in a separate moderation log.
These are practical checks for administrators, not a Discord-mandated checklist. Community discussions have mentioned deleted-message logging bots, but they do not verify any particular product’s current features, reliability, or privacy practices. Treat vendor claims as something to check independently.

What to avoid
- “Deleted message recovery” apps and modified clients: Discord’s published materials do not describe them as a way to restore messages, and its Data Package statement contradicts claims that an export can recover manually deleted text.
- Token grabbers, browser extensions, or requests for your credentials: Never share your Discord token or password with a service claiming it can retrieve deleted messages.
- Generic file-recovery software or storage devices: These do not restore message text that Discord says is no longer stored on its systems.
- Cache promises: Discord’s note that cached uploads can take time to clear is not evidence that deleted text can be retrieved from a cache.
