Yes. You do not need a Kindle e-reader to read Kindle books: you can use Amazon’s Kindle for Web in a compatible browser or the Kindle app on a compatible device. You will need an Amazon account to access your Kindle library, and Amazon notes that not every title works in its web reader.
Ways to read Kindle books without an e-reader
“Kindle” can mean Amazon’s dedicated e-reader, its digital book format and store, or its reading apps. The hardware is optional: use a browser or a compatible computer or mobile device instead.

How to read in a browser
- Open read.amazon.com in a supported mobile or desktop browser.
- Sign in with the Amazon account associated with your Kindle library.
- Open a book in your library to read it in the browser.
Amazon describes Kindle for Web as an option for people without a Kindle e-reader or Kindle app, but warns that not all titles are supported. If the book you want does not open in the browser, use the Kindle app or an e-reader instead. Amazon’s support page lists browser and mobile requirements, which may change over time: Kindle for Web requirements and help.
Using the Kindle app on a computer or phone
Amazon offers Kindle apps for compatible devices. Its current desktop-app help lists Windows 11 and Mac OS X 10.14 or higher. Amazon also says its legacy desktop app, formerly called Kindle for PC, has been unsupported since June 30, 2026. For Android, Amazon lists Android 10.0 or higher. These requirements can change, so check Amazon’s current guidance before installing, especially on an older device.

The cited requirements do not establish current iOS app compatibility. For an iPhone or iPad, check the Kindle app listing in the App Store and Amazon’s support information for the current requirements.
Amazon account and buying Kindle books
Sign in with an Amazon account to access Kindle books and other content across devices. You can buy Kindle books through Amazon’s website in a phone or desktop browser; you do not have to make the purchase on a Kindle e-reader. A Kindle e-reader has additional setup requirements: Amazon’s current setup instructions list an Amazon account and internet connection. Those are requirements for setting up the dedicated device, not prerequisites for using Kindle for Web.

Which option should you choose?
- Choose Kindle for Web if you want to read without installing an app, and first confirm that your title is available in the browser reader.
- Choose the Kindle app if you prefer an installed app and your device meets its current requirements.
- Choose the desktop app if you want to read on a supported Windows or Mac computer.
- Choose an e-reader if you want a dedicated reading device; it is not necessary just to buy or access Kindle books.
