No. Beverage tequila is not an established or recommended vehicle fuel. Use the fuel specified in your owner’s manual and buy it from a properly labeled pump; do not pour tequila into a tank.
Why tequila is not the same as fuel ethanol
Tequila is a regulated alcoholic beverage. Mexico’s official tequila standard sets its alcohol content at 35%–55% by volume. The 2012 standard does not establish tequila as a motor fuel.
Fuel ethanol is a different product: the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) describes it as a transportation fuel used chiefly in measured blends with finished motor gasoline. EIA also says a denaturant is added to fuel ethanol to make it unfit for human consumption. Those specifications and intended uses distinguish it from beverage tequila. EIA’s ethanol overview and ethanol FAQ describe fuel blends and denaturing; they do not identify tequila as a substitute.
What the gasoline blend labels mean in the United States
In U.S. guidance, E10, E15, and E85 refer to gasoline blends containing different proportions of ethanol. Which blend is appropriate depends on the vehicle, not on the fact that tequila also contains alcohol.

These are U.S.-specific descriptions, not universal rules. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance and local fuel labeling. See the EIA blend guidance and the EPA’s E85 information.
Do ethanol’s fuel-economy figures apply to tequila?
No. EIA reports that fuel ethanol has about 33% less energy than pure gasoline and estimates that E10 may reduce fuel economy by about 3%. These figures concern fuel ethanol and gasoline blends; they are not measurements of tequila in an engine and should not be used to predict what tequila would do in a particular vehicle. EIA’s FAQ was last updated April 1, 2024.

What to do if you have already added tequila
The available sources do not test tequila in an engine or establish a specific engine effect or repair outcome. Do not start or continue running the vehicle based on a guess. Contact the vehicle manufacturer’s roadside assistance or a qualified mechanic and explain what was added and how much; follow their instructions for your vehicle.

Use the fuel grade and blend permitted by your owner’s manual, and follow the labels at the pump. Do not treat beverage alcohol as a fuel additive or substitute for a manufacturer-approved gasoline blend.
