No—having a PCIe slot is not enough to guarantee that a graphics card will work in a PC. Check the exact card against the motherboard and system, case clearance, power supply and connectors, firmware, and supported drivers. For laptops, proprietary desktops, or compact PCs, confirm upgrade support for the exact computer model.
Check whether the graphics card is compatible with your PC
Use the specifications for the exact graphics-card model and the documentation for your computer. Cards built around the same GPU can differ in size and power connections, so a GPU family name alone is not a compatibility check.
Motherboard slot and PCIe generation
Most conventional desktop graphics cards use a full-length PCI Express x16 slot. PCIe generations are generally backward-compatible: PCI-SIG says PCIe 5.0 cards can plug into PCIe 1.x through 4.x slots and operate at the highest performance supported by the configuration. A generation mismatch may limit performance, but it does not by itself mean the card cannot work.

Case dimensions and cable clearance
Compare the exact card’s length, height, and thickness with the case’s graphics-card clearance. Also account for drive cages, radiators, fans, other cards, and the space needed to route and bend power cables without pressing them against the side panel.
For scale, NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition guidance specifies a two-slot card measuring 244 mm long by 98 mm high and asks builders to allow an additional 36 mm for power cables. These are dimensions for that Founders Edition guidance, not every RTX 4060 Ti; partner models can vary. NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 Ti product guidance has the model-specific details. Its RTX 4070 family guidance gives a different dimension example, so check the exact variant you plan to install.

Power supply capacity and connectors
Check the card maker’s recommended or required system power and the type and number of power connectors. Then compare those requirements with the exact PSU model and the cables it provides. A PSU’s wattage label does not tell you whether it has the right connectors. Do not assume you can substitute a connector or use an improvised adapter; follow the card and PSU manufacturers’ instructions. The rest of the PC can also affect its power needs.
Manufacturer figures illustrate why requirements must be checked card by card. NVIDIA recommends a minimum 550 W system power for the RTX 4060 Ti Founders Edition and notes that a higher rating may be needed depending on system configuration. Its RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 SUPER Founders Edition guidance gives a 650 W minimum recommendation and different connection options. AMD’s RX 6800 XT quick-start guide specifies its own model-specific minimum PSU requirement. These figures apply to those products’ guidance only; consult the documentation for your chosen card and PSU.

- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Computer type, firmware, and drivers
A standard desktop compatibility check may not apply to a proprietary OEM or small-form-factor computer. Such systems can have limits on card length, thickness, cooling, PSU capacity, connectors, or firmware support. Check the service manual and vendor support information for your exact PC model before buying a card.
A laptop’s graphics hardware is usually not a desktop add-in card, so the installation steps below do not establish that its GPU can be upgraded. Use the laptop maker’s documentation to verify whether an upgrade is supported.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
After confirming the hardware, check that the GPU maker supports your operating system and card with an available driver. Use the maker’s support page or supported detection tool, and verify compatibility for your OS and product. AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install documentation, for example, describes checking AMD device and Windows compatibility and retrieving suitable driver packages for supported systems.

Install the card safely
Use the graphics-card, motherboard or PC, and case manuals for model-specific instructions. The general process is:

- Powered by GeForce RTX 5070 Ti
- Integrated with 16GB GDDR7 256bit memory interface
- PCIe 5.0
- WINDFORCE cooling system
- Shut down the PC and disconnect its power. Follow the hardware maker’s guidance for discharging static before handling components.
- Open the case and remove the expansion-slot covers required for the card. Check that the card’s path is clear of obstructions.
- Align the card with the suitable PCIe slot and insert it evenly until seated. Secure its bracket to the case as directed by the manuals.
- Connect the required PSU power leads. Before closing the case, check that cables are routed clear of fans and have room to bend without being forced against the side panel.
- Connect the monitor to an output on the new card where appropriate, then start the PC and install a driver supported for that card and operating system.
AMD’s hardware guidance advises turning off the system and discharging static before installation procedures; its RX 6800 XT quick-start guide provides model-specific instructions. Follow the documentation for your own components rather than treating these general steps as a substitute.

- Check that the card is fully seated in the slot and secured.
- Confirm that all required power leads are connected to the card.
- Make sure the monitor is connected to the intended output on the new card.
- Consult the motherboard or OEM documentation for firmware requirements or slot restrictions.
- Use the card maker’s support instructions to check driver and operating-system compatibility.
These are initial checks, not a diagnosis of a specific failure. If they do not resolve the problem, use the support guidance for the exact PC and graphics-card models.
