There is a reported way to fit certain mobile Intel processors into selected LGA1151 desktop motherboards using a modified chip and an interposer—but the Comet Lake conversion behind this idea is 14nm, not 10nm. It is an experimental, model-specific modification, not an Intel-supported CPU upgrade.

What the reported desktop conversion involves

Mobile Intel CPUs are normally laptop processors, not desktop socket upgrades. Intel uses that terminology in its Differences Between Intel Desktop and Mobile Processors support article, last reviewed December 10, 2024.

In the reported conversion, a mobile BGA processor is modified and paired with an interposer to fit certain LGA1151 desktop boards. A Tom’s Hardware overview describes this adapter-based practice and says compatibility depends on selected motherboards running modified BIOS firmware. That establishes that such conversions have been reported; it does not establish support for a particular board, current product availability, or a reliable seller.

Is the converted Comet Lake CPU actually 10nm?

No. The reported QTJ2 conversion is based on Comet Lake, which uses Intel’s 14nm process. The confusion comes from Intel’s 10th-generation branding: that generation included both 14nm Comet Lake and the separate 10nm Ice Lake family. “10th Gen” does not mean “10nm.” Intel’s 10th Gen mobile processor brief, for example, describes the i9-10980HK as an eight-core, 16-thread mobile processor; it does not establish desktop-board compatibility.

MACHINIST H110 LGA 1151 Motherboard for Intel Core 6th 7th i3/i5/i7, Pentium, Celeron Series CPUs (DDR4, NVME/SATA M.2, PCIe 2.0, SATA 6Gb/s)
  • LGA 1151 socket: Perfectly compatible with Intel 6th/7th gen Core i3/i5/i7, Pentium, Celeron Series processors. (Eg Core i3-7100, Core i5-7400, Pentium G4560, Celeron G3900.) It may not be compatible with Core i7 processors; confirm your processor model compatibility before purchasing
  • Dual Channel DDR4 Slot: H110 mainboard is equipped with 2 DDR4 Non ECC memory slots, the maximum frequency is 2400MHz, and the maximum memory capacity is 32GB (Each memory slot supports 16GB)
  • NVME/NGFF M.2 Interface: The M.2 interface can be manually converted to NVME and NFFF mode, and the control part can be manually pulled out. The two slots use different channels, the NVME M.2 slot uses the PCIe channel, and the SATA M.2 slot uses the SATA channel
  • Other Interface: PCIe 2.0 X16 Slot, SATA 3.0, USB 3.0, VGA and High Definition Multimedia Interface, which can support 1080P high-definition video output without a graphics card.
  • The package Includes: 1*SATA cable, 1*I/O baffle, 1*motherboard. The motherboard does not include a battery. User manual is not included in the package, you can download the user manual file on the product details page. If you need to download the driver, it is recommended to download: Driver Talent, or use Win 10 system

Tom’s Hardware Italia described a QTJ2 listing with six cores, Hyper-Threading, a 2.4GHz base frequency and boost up to 4.3GHz. Those are specifications reported for that example at the time of its article, not independently verified current specifications or a guarantee for every converted chip. The article does not make the part a 10nm processor.

What the QTJ2 report says you need

Tom’s Hardware Italia reported that the QTJ2 product used an integrated interposer for LGA1151 boards and required BIOS modification. Its account identified selected 100-, 200- and 300-series motherboards as compatible, specifically excluding Z390, and called for a cooler with a flat contact surface. These are reported conditions for that product at the time—not a universal compatibility chart. Do not infer compatibility from chipset family alone.

SHANGZHAOYUAN H110 LGA 1151 Motherboard for Intel 6-9th Gen Core i3/i5 Pentium, Celeron Series Processors, DDR4, PCIe x16, NVME/NGFF M.2, VAG, HDMI-Compatible, SATA 6Gbps
  • LGA 1151 Socket: The Intel H110 Motherboard is compatible with Intel 6th/7th/8th/9th gen Core i3/i5, Pentium, Celeron Series processors. (Eg Core i3-6320, i3-7100, i3-7300, Core i5-6500, i5-6600, i5-7600, etc.) Warm Tips: It may not be compatible with i7 processors, please confirm whether your processor model is compatible before purchasing
  • Dual-Channel DDR4 Slot: The LGA1151 Gaming Motherboard is equipped with 2 DDR4 RAM slots, supports Non-ECC memory and the maximum memory capacity is 32GB(2x16GB). And supports 2133/2400MHz memory clock speed
  • NVME/NGFF M.2 Interface: NVME/NGFF M.2 Interface: NVME M.2 and SATA M.2 modes can be manually switched. The two modes use different lanes; NVME M.2 mode uses a PCIe 2.0 x4 lane, while the NGFF M.2 slot uses a SATA lane
  • Video Interface: The Intel Motherboard is equipped with VGA and HDMI-compatible interfaces, which can support 1080P high-definition video output without an external graphics card. Note: To use these two interfaces, your CPU needs to support integrated graphics
  • PCIe Slot: The computer motherboard provides 1 PCIe X16 slot. The PCIe standard is determined by the CPU, and under the PCIe 3.0 protocol, the X16 slot has a throughput of 128Gbps
  • Board and BIOS: The exact motherboard model, revision and modified BIOS matter. The later overview also warns that support is limited to selected boards with modified firmware.
  • Physical fit and cooling: An interposer changes the installation from an ordinary desktop CPU swap. The reported QTJ2 configuration calls for a cooler with a flat contact surface.
  • Risk: Modified firmware and uncertain board support can cause compatibility and security problems. Intel does not present this aftermarket conversion as a supported installation.

What about a genuine 10nm mobile CPU?

Cannon Lake is a separate historical 10nm mobile processor family, not the Comet Lake conversion described above. A 2024 report covered a Core M3-8114Y Cannon Lake-Y engineering sample installed on a custom compact board; the chip was reported as a BGA1392 part. That unusual board-level build does not demonstrate a conventional socket upgrade or a generally obtainable desktop kit. A 2017 PCGamesN report likewise distinguished 10nm mobile Cannon Lake from 14nm desktop Coffee Lake, but it is historical context rather than evidence of current availability.

Checks to make before considering a converted chip

Treat the purchase as a hardware experiment. Before proceeding, get specific answers for the exact combination rather than relying on a chipset label or a generic claim that a CPU “works on LGA1151.”

  1. Ask for the exact CPU model and confirmation that the item includes the required interposer or adapter.
  2. Require the seller to name the supported motherboard model and revision, along with the required BIOS version or modification.
  3. Check the motherboard documentation and seek credible evidence for that exact board-and-CPU combination; do not assume compatibility from the reported 100-, 200- or 300-series categories.
  4. Confirm the cooler’s contact requirements, including whether the flat contact surface cited for the QTJ2 report applies to the specific assembly.
  5. Decide whether you accept the compatibility and security risks of modified firmware and the possibility that the installation will not work as expected.

Current inventory, seller trustworthiness and warranty terms are not established by the conversion reports. A listing is only actionable if it identifies the converted processor and adapter and gives model-specific motherboard and BIOS compatibility details.
