Yes, you can play Xbox games on a Windows PC, but there is no single switch that does it for every game. Which route works depends on the game: it may have a native PC release, sit in the PC Game Pass catalog, carry an Xbox Play Anywhere badge, or be cloud-streamable. Game Pass, cross-buy and cross-play are three separate things, and mixing them up is the usual reason people buy the wrong thing.
The four ways Xbox games reach a PC
Xbox’s Xbox on PC page describes the Xbox PC app as the place to find and play PC games. Which route applies is decided per game.
1. A native PC version
Many Xbox titles have a separate PC release. If the game is listed for PC, you can install it on a compatible Windows computer. Check whether it is sold individually or included with a plan, and read the PC system requirements on its listing.

A subscription route. Per Xbox’s PC Game Pass page, games can be played on a Windows PC, and each game’s detail page lists its hardware and OS requirements.

3. Xbox Play Anywhere
A cross-buy program for selected digital games. Xbox says Play Anywhere games play on PC, Xbox console and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost.
4. Cloud streaming
Supported games can be streamed to supported devices, potentially without installing them. Some cloud-playable titles require a Game Pass subscription, and availability varies by game, plan, region and device (Xbox).

If you own a game on Xbox, do you get it on PC?
Not automatically. Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge on the game’s Xbox Store listing. Xbox states that participating digital games bought through the Xbox or Windows Store can be played on Xbox, Windows 10/11 PCs and supported handhelds at no extra cost. Saves, add-ons and achievements carry across supported devices. The same game can be signed in on only one device at a time (Xbox Play Anywhere).
Play Anywhere is for digital purchases. Nothing on the cited pages suggests an Xbox disc grants a PC copy, so don’t assume it does. Microsoft’s usage rules for digital goods cover how digital content and subscriptions can be used.

How Game Pass on PC works
Xbox’s wording is explicit: subscribers have access to games in the library “until either the subscription is canceled/expires, or a game leaves the Game Pass library” (PC Game Pass FAQ). So Game Pass is closer to renting from a rotating catalog than to buying.
- Titles and availability vary by time, region, plan and platform.
- Check the live listing for a specific game before subscribing for it; catalog contents and prices change.
- If you leave or the game rotates out, you lose access unless you bought the game separately.
Cross-play: playing with friends on other devices
Cross-play is about multiplayer, not ownership. Xbox’s FAQ says: “If the game supports cross-play, you can play your favorite Xbox games with your friends, regardless of where they play.” The condition matters: it is up to each game. A PC player and a console player can only play together if that game supports it, and each must own or have access to their own copy through one of the routes above.

The three features are independent. A game can be on PC without Play Anywhere, and can have cross-play without cross-buy.

Setting up the Xbox PC app
- Download and open the Xbox PC app on your Windows PC.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you use on Xbox.
- Find the game and check its listing for PC requirements, Play Anywhere badge, Game Pass or cloud status.
- Install it, or launch it via cloud if offered.
App requirements
Per Xbox’s pages, as checked on 7 October 2026: Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher, 150 MB of storage for the app, and a 720p display. If your PC runs Windows in S mode, you may need to switch it off to use the app (Xbox on PC).

These are app requirements only. Games need extra storage and often stronger hardware, so a PC that runs the app may not run a given game. Check each game’s own requirements.
Do you need a controller?
No fixed rule exists. Xbox lists its Wireless Controller and partner controllers as accessories for playing Xbox on PC, but whether a game supports gamepad, keyboard and mouse, or both is shown on its listing. A controller is a sensible option if you prefer gamepad play, not a requirement.
