Sometimes—but only when the specific game supports crossplay between the platforms and editions your group uses. “Co-op” describes a way to play together; it does not automatically mean a Steam copy can connect to a console or another PC storefront.
How to tell whether your group can play together
Crossplay is a game-specific feature. A game may connect Steam players with some consoles but not others, or support crossplay between consoles while excluding a particular PC storefront. Look for an official statement that names the exact platform pair, rather than relying on a general “crossplay” or “PC crossplay” label.
- Confirm the platform pair. Check the game’s current official support page or in-game crossplay settings for each platform and PC storefront in your group.
- Match editions and updates. Requirements can vary by version. Iron Gate’s 2022 Valheim crossplay announcement says players should use the same patch version; mismatches may prevent connections.
- Find out how invitations work. A game may require an external account and display name, an in-game friend list, a join code, or a server configured for crossplay.
- Check hosting and installed content. Server settings, the host platform, player limits, mods, and other installed content can affect whether a mixed-platform group can connect.
These details can change, so verify them with the game’s current official information before buying or troubleshooting. The examples below illustrate different requirements; they are not a complete compatibility catalog.

Examples of Steam crossplay requirements
Valheim: join codes, server settings, and matching patches
Iron Gate’s 2022 announcement says the crossplay update lets players join across platforms. For mixed-platform play, it describes joining with a code. A dedicated-server host must enable crossplay for non-Steam players, and players should be on the same patch version. The announcement also says the crossplay server parameter uses PlayFab instead of Steamworks. Treat these as details from that announcement, not a guarantee about every current version or platform pairing.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands: SHiFT matchmaking
2K’s Steam-hosted FAQ lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store for online crossplay. It says crossplay uses SHiFT Matchmaking, includes an opt-in prompt, and requires a Crossplay Display Name. These are requirements for this title, not a general rule for Steam games.
Farming Simulator 22: host platform and content affect play
The game’s Steam-hosted FAQ lists PC, Mac, PlayStation, Xbox, and Stadia, and says crossplay player limits depend on the host platform. It also describes compatible-content requirements and restrictions involving mods. Because this is a historical FAQ that mentions Stadia, do not treat its platform list as confirmation of current Stadia availability.

Crossplay is different from Steam Remote Play Together
Native crossplay is a feature built into a game that lets players on specified platforms connect to one another. Steam Remote Play Together is instead a way to stream a supported local multiplayer session to Steam Friends. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says only the host needs to own and install the game; additional players connect through Steam Remote Play streaming.

Remote Play Together can let friends play local co-op remotely, but it is not a general bridge between a Steam copy and a console copy. Valve describes inviting Steam Friends, so do not assume that a friend on a console or another storefront can join this way.

What to compare before choosing a game
For a mixed-platform group, check the game’s current official information for each of these points:
- Which consoles and PC storefronts can play together.
- Whether invites are direct, account-based, or use a code or server.
- Whether an external account or crossplay opt-in is required.
- Whether players need matching game versions, DLC, mods, or other content.
- Whether the host’s platform changes the party-size limit or server requirements.
The examples show why “Steam co-op” alone cannot answer compatibility: the supported platform combinations and connection rules are set title by title.
