Usually, no. Avoid sports that could hit, load, or cause a fall onto your injured wrist while the fracture heals, unless your treating clinician has cleared that activity. A cast, brace, or lack of pain does not prove the bone is ready for sport. The right return date depends on the fracture, its treatment and healing, your symptoms, and the activity’s impact and fall risks.
If you suspect a fracture, get it assessed rather than trying to play through it. The NHS says an X-ray is used to confirm a break and assess its severity. NHS: Broken arm or wrist
Why a broken wrist and sport are a risky combination
Sport can expose a healing wrist to a direct blow, a fall onto the hand, forceful gripping or throwing, or weight-bearing. Any of those demands may conflict with your fracture restrictions. The NHS advises not using the affected arm, while the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) specifically cautions people with scaphoid fractures against contact sports and activities with a risk of falling onto the hand unless their doctor approves advanced activity.

“Broken wrist” is not one uniform diagnosis. A distal radius fracture and a scaphoid fracture can have different treatment and healing courses, so a timeline that applies to one should not be treated as clearance for the other.

Consider what the sport asks of the wrist
- Contact or collision: an opponent, ball, or equipment may strike the wrist.
- Fall risk: a slip or loss of balance can send body weight through the hand.
- Wrist loading and skill demands: gripping, throwing, catching, or supporting body weight may stress the injury.
- Role of the injured wrist: the demands differ depending on whether the wrist is essential to the activity.
These factors help frame a discussion with your fracture clinic or orthopaedic clinician; they do not create a universal list of safe sports.
How long does it take to return to sport?
Published recovery ranges are general guidance, not a personal sports clearance date. They refer to different injuries and recommendations, and the time a fracture takes to heal is not necessarily the time it takes to be ready for collision, throwing, weight-bearing, or fall-risk activity.

| Source and injury guidance | Published timing | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NHS, broken arm or wrist | Usually around 6 to 8 weeks to recover; severe damage may take longer. | General recovery guidance, not a sports-specific clearance. |
| NHS inform, wrist fracture | Most healing happens between 6 and 12 weeks; its staged advice lists return to contact sports at 12 weeks. | Published guidance, not automatic clearance for an individual. |
| AAOS OrthoInfo, distal radius fracture | Most take about 3 months to heal enough for all activities; demanding activities such as skiing or football may resume between 3 and 6 months after injury, depending on recovery. | Applies to distal radius fractures; the activity range depends on the individual. |
| AAOS OrthoInfo, scaphoid fracture | A cast or splint may be needed for up to 6 months or until the fracture has healed. | During this period, avoid contact sport and fall-risk activities unless the doctor approves advanced activity. |
| Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, wrist fracture | Advises avoiding heavy lifting and contact sport for 3 months. | The page was updated 5 August 2025; its stated next review date of 1 March 2026 has passed, so the advice may warrant rechecking. |
| Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, distal radius fracture | Sport-specific throwing and catching practice can build gradually from around 6 weeks, before full training and competition. | A staged example, not permission to start at that time without considering your fracture plan. |
These recommendations differ because fracture type, treatment, and the activity being considered differ. Follow the restrictions and follow-up plan from your treating team, who can assess your fracture and progress rather than relying on a general calendar.

How to return safely
- Follow your fracture team’s restrictions and attend follow-ups. NHS guidance notes that follow-up appointments are used to check healing. Ask specifically about your sport, not just everyday arm use.
- While the wrist is immobilized, follow the care instructions. General wrist-fracture guidance recommends moving the fingers and thumb and maintaining elbow and shoulder movement as instructed. Do not add wrist loading or drills that conflict with your fracture plan.
- Resume wrist movement and strengthening only when permitted. Use the prescribed exercises or hand therapy. NHS inform advises stopping exercises if symptoms worsen or new pain occurs.
- Build activity in stages. Progress from everyday function and light activity to controlled sport-specific drills, then full practice, and finally competition as directed. Hull’s guidance describes building throwing and catching practice before full training and competition.
- Scale back if symptoms worsen. Do not use a pain-free test alone to clear yourself: pain may improve before the fracture is ready for full sport. Your clinician may consider the fracture pattern, examination, and follow-up imaging when deciding whether to progress.
Contact, collision, high-speed, weight-bearing, and fall-risk sports deserve particular care because a blow or fall can load the healing wrist. For a scaphoid fracture, the AAOS advises avoiding contact sports and activities with a fall risk unless the doctor approves advanced activity.

When a cast needs urgent attention
Seek urgent medical advice if pain is getting worse, the cast is broken or feels too tight or loose, the hand or arm is numb or markedly swollen, fingers look blue or white, or there is a bad smell or fluid discharge under the cast. Keep the cast dry and follow your care team’s instructions. The NHS notes that waterproof cast covers are available from pharmacies for bathing; a cover is for cast care, not protection that makes sport safe.
