A cast, splint, or brace does not make it safe to play sports with a broken wrist. Follow the treatment plan from your fracture clinic, doctor, or physiotherapist, and get personal clearance before returning—especially for contact sports. The right timing depends on the fracture, treatment, symptoms, and sport.
Can you play sports with a broken wrist?
Usually, you should avoid sport that could jar, load, or expose the injured wrist to impact while the fracture is healing. Immobilization is part of treatment, not protective equipment for playing through an injury. A clinician may give different instructions depending on the fracture and how it is being treated.
Contact sports carry particular risk, but non-contact activities can also involve falls, gripping, or pressure through the wrist. Ask your treating clinician which activities, if any, are appropriate during each stage of recovery.
How can you protect your wrist while it heals?
Use only the support prescribed for your fracture
Wear the cast, removable splint, or other support as instructed. Some fractures are managed with a removable cast or splint; others need a different treatment plan. A retail brace or cast cover should not be treated as a way to make sport safe. Hull University Teaching Hospitals describes removable supports as part of fracture care, while Northern Care Alliance advises wearing the support provided. Keep the rest of the arm moving as directed
While your wrist is casted, follow your care team’s instructions about moving your fingers, elbow, and shoulder. Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust recommends keeping these joints moving to help maintain function and limit stiffness. Do not add wrist exercises or change your support routine without clinical advice. Kingston and Richmond: what to expect after a wrist fracture.
Do not use pain relief or a brace to mask a problem
Feeling less pain does not by itself show that the bone is ready for sport. If an activity causes pain or symptoms worsen, stop and ask your clinician what to do rather than pushing through.

When can you return to sports after a wrist fracture?
There is no single safe date for everyone. NHS patient guidance gives different examples: Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust advises waiting 12 weeks after injury before contact sport, while Northern Care Alliance says to wait until symptom-free and notes that this is unlikely within the first 8 weeks. These are recommendations from particular services, not a universal timetable. Royal Berkshire: conservative management of distal radius fracture; Northern Care Alliance: simple wrist fracture discharge advice.
Other guidance emphasizes recovery of function. Hull University Teaching Hospitals advises waiting for full strength and range of movement before returning to active hobbies and describes gradual sport-specific practice around six weeks in its recovery guidance. Royal Cornwall Hospitals advises avoiding sports and heavy lifting for at least 12 weeks, potentially longer depending on the injury. Follow the advice for your fracture rather than combining these example timelines into a personal clearance date. Children with a specific growth-plate fracture need their own guidance
University Hospitals Sussex says most children with the particular Salter-Harris wrist fracture covered by its guidance can return to full sports after 4–6 weeks, while noting a small increased risk of injury up to 12 weeks. It also says non-contact swimming may start when the child is comfortable and out of the cast. This is specific pediatric guidance and should not be applied to adults, other fracture types, or a child’s different injury. University Hospitals Sussex: Salter-Harris wrist fracture.

Once your clinician says it is appropriate to resume activity, return gradually rather than going straight to full training or competition. Airedale NHS describes a staged rehabilitation approach, including sport-tailored exercises during a later strengthening phase under therapist or consultant guidance. Ask your care team what progression fits your sport and injury. Airedale NHS: wrist fracture rehabilitation.

Both right hand and left hand carpal tunnel wrist braces are available in two sizes: S/M & L/XL. To ensure the correct fit, measure the circumference of your wrist, and compare to our sizing chart. This lower arm band comes ready to wear out of the box: no need to struggle with correct splint placement or straps. Get relief right away!
- WORK WHILE YOU HEAL. You can keep on typing away on the keyboard and receiving pain relief while working. This sleeve holds your hands and wrists in the correct position, providing just enough restriction to prevent repeated strains and tears. During your therapy with this wrist brace for carpal tunnel, you may experience some reduction in skills that require the ability to roll your wrist, like in playing tennis or golf.
- FULLY ADJUSTABLE FOR MAXIMUM SUPPORT. Hook-and-eye straps allow you to customize the tightness of the brace. Make sure the top strap is secured at the heel of the hand/top of wrist, and the bottom strap slightly further down the forearm. Improper strap securement may reduce or even impair healing of muscles, joints, tendons, and ligaments. More flexibility than a cast, perfect for spica, tendonitis, tenosynovitis. Can be used in between utilizing an ice pack. Great protection while sleeping.
- COPPER INFUSED NYLON. By infusing copper directly into the fibers of the fabric, it never washes away and keeps working to extend the life of the product, delivering maximum hygienic benefits. It's breathable and wicks away moisture, keeping you dry and comfortable while you work, play and sleep. The high quality material easily stands up to washing without stretching or losing shape. Not an elastic compression sports wrap or glove for golfers. Does provide thumb support.
