Yes. A Sega Genesis can work with a modern TV if you connect it through a compatible analog input or use a scaler that converts the console’s analog signal to HDMI. The right setup depends on your Genesis model, its AV connector, the signal used by the cable, and the inputs your TV or scaler accepts.
Check the Genesis and TV before choosing a cable
The Genesis does not output native HDMI. Its original video connections are analog, and Genesis models can use different AV connector styles. Check the model label on the console and compare its connector with the cable you plan to use; a cable that fits one Genesis model may not fit another. The Genesis guide describes stock composite and analog RGB output.
Next, check your TV’s actual inputs or its manual. Some modern TVs have composite inputs and others do not. Do not assume that a yellow RCA-style input is present, or that a component-video input will accept composite video.

Connect composite directly when the TV supports it
For the Genesis Model 2, SEGA’s instruction manual documents a direct composite connection: plug the cable into the console’s AV output, connect the yellow plug to the TV’s composite video input and the white plug to an audio input, then select that input on the TV. SEGA’s manual says: “Insert the yellow plug on the Audio/Video Cable into the composite TV or monitor’s video input jack (or into the VCR video input jack).” See the Genesis Model 2 Instruction Manual.

This is the simplest route if your TV accepts composite. The manual also describes connecting through a VCR, a legacy option for equipment that still has one.
Use a scaler when the TV only has HDMI
If your TV lacks a suitable analog input, use an analog-to-HDMI scaler. The scaler’s input must match the signal from the Genesis cable; the scaler then sends digital video to the TV over HDMI. A device described as a scaler is not automatically compatible with every Genesis signal, so check the exact model’s input list and compatibility notes.

Composite into a scaler
Some scalers accept composite video, but Genesis composite output has a known caveat: RetroTINK warns that it may not work correctly with the 2X Pro and recommends HD Retrovision cables for Genesis. The 2X Pro accepts composite, S-Video and component inputs and line-doubles standard-definition analog video to digital output. Check the manufacturer’s advisory before buying rather than assuming any composite-to-HDMI path will work.

For a cleaner analog signal, a Genesis RGB cable can feed a scaler that supports the corresponding format. Some cables convert RGB to component, which can then connect to a scaler with component input. RetroTINK’s 5X Pro lists composite, S-Video, component, RGB and SCART inputs, with digital output for HDTVs, and advises using higher-quality connections for best results.

Before ordering an RGB or component cable, verify the Genesis model and region, the console-side connector and wiring, and the scaler’s input format. A passive cable alone does not convert analog video to HDMI.
Compare the connection options

If the picture does not appear
- Confirm the cable fits the specific Genesis model and is fully seated in the console’s AV output.
- Check that the TV is set to the input connected to the console or scaler.
- For direct composite, make sure the yellow plug goes to composite video and the audio plug goes to an audio input.
- For a scaler, verify that its input matches the cable’s signal format and check the manufacturer’s model-specific Genesis compatibility notes.
Compatibility cannot be assumed for every television, Genesis revision or converter. The TV model, region and TV standard can affect which cable and scaler are suitable.
