Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports without a Nintendo Switch Online membership by choosing Play Nearby. Nintendo describes this as play without communication: it works on one console, supports solo play against computer-controlled opponents, and does not require an internet connection. Full online matches require both an internet connection and an active membership.
Which modes work offline or without a membership?
The mode names can be confusing: Play Nearby is for one-console play without communication, while Play Globally connects you to online play. Nintendo’s guidance distinguishes the modes this way:

| LAN Play | The support guide does not say whether internet service may be absent | Not stated in the LAN guide | Players on multiple consoles connected through a wired shared router | Up to four consoles and two players per console; each console needs the game, and the setup uses a wired router and Ethernet cables. Nintendo’s U.S. FAQ puts the online requirement plainly: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” Without membership, the Play Globally option is only a trial against computer competitors; it is not full online matchmaking.

- Start Nintendo Switch Sports and choose Play Nearby.
- Set up the Joy-Con controllers for the sport and number of players. Play Nearby supports one to four players, with the maximum depending on the sport.
- If playing alone, start the sport to compete against computer-controlled opponents. If others are joining, they play on the same console.
Nintendo’s Japan support guidance calls Play Nearby the mode for playing “without communication” and says it is not a way to link multiple consoles through local wireless. Nintendo lists all eight sports as available in Play Nearby, with Basketball and Golf requiring a free software update. Availability of those sports in this mode is stated in Nintendo’s Japan support guidance. [How to play without Nintendo Switch Online membership; Which mode to select to play without communication]

What to expect from the no-membership online trial
If you select Play Globally without an active membership, Nintendo allows a trial competition against computer-controlled competitors. Unlike Play Nearby, this option is not offline: it requires internet access and a software update. A membership is required for full online play. [Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ; Nintendo Support Japan]
Can multiple consoles play together without internet?
Nintendo documents a separate LAN Play setup: multiple consoles connect by Ethernet through a shared router, with up to four consoles and up to two players per console. Each console needs its own copy of the game, either physical or downloaded. However, Nintendo’s LAN instructions do not explicitly confirm that the setup works when the router has no internet service, so do not assume LAN Play is guaranteed to work fully offline. Controllers and equipment to check
Nintendo Switch Sports does not support handheld mode. Nintendo lists single or paired Joy-Con controllers, and some play may use a Joy-Con with a Leg Strap. The Leg Strap is used for some Soccer gameplay; it is not needed just to play offline. Nintendo’s FAQ says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. Controller needs vary by sport and by whether players share a console, so check the in-game setup instructions and the contents of the edition you have before buying a separate strap.
