Yes. It Takes Two supports online co-op for two players, and only one player needs to own the full game: the other can join with the free Friend’s Pass. Both players must be online at the same time. You can also play couch co-op offline. Cross-play is date-sensitive: EA announced support with the Nintendo Switch 2 release scheduled for October 15, 2026, but that update is forthcoming as of October 9, 2026.
Can I play It Takes Two online with a friend?
Yes. It Takes Two is a two-player co-op game, not a solo game. For an online session, both players need to be online at the same time and have applicable first-party platform accounts. EA’s online play guidance also lists a console online subscription as a requirement; check the current store or support page for your console because subscription names and entitlements can change.

To start, the player who owns the game invites a friend from the game’s main menu. The invited player needs to install the free Friend’s Pass for the relevant platform and accept the invitation. EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ says a host can invite one friend at a time; another friend can be invited after the current friend stops playing.

No. One player needs to own the full game, and the other can join through Friend’s Pass without buying a second copy. The guest must install the pass for their platform and have the applicable platform account. The host’s game progression determines where the co-op session can start.

If neither player owns the game, EA says Friend’s Pass lets you try the first chapter together in local or online co-op. To play beyond that trial, one player must own the full game.
Can you play It Takes Two split screen offline?
Yes. The game supports local couch co-op without an internet connection, according to EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ. This is a two-player local mode; the game is not playable solo.

Does It Takes Two have crossplay?
It depends on when you play. EA’s Friend’s Pass FAQ describes cross-generation play, such as between PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but says players cannot use that support to connect across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC. EA’s Nintendo Switch co-op page likewise says a Switch player needs a partner playing the Switch version.
EA later announced that cross-play would arrive with the Nintendo Switch 2 release scheduled for October 15, 2026. That date has not arrived as of October 9, 2026, so treat cross-play as announced, not already available. The announcement describes cross-play through Friend’s Pass but does not establish every platform pairing. Confirm supported pairings with EA’s current information before arranging a session, especially around the release date.

How to invite a friend with Friend’s Pass
- Choose the platform and play mode. For online co-op, both players should use compatible platform editions and be online. For couch co-op, connect locally; internet is not required.
- Have the host open the full game. The player who owns It Takes Two starts the game and invites a friend from the main menu.
- Have the guest install Friend’s Pass. Download the free pass from the digital store for the guest’s platform, then accept the host’s invitation.
- Check online requirements if the invitation does not work. Confirm both players are online, signed in to their platform accounts and, for console online play, meet the platform’s current subscription requirements. If using different platforms, check whether that pairing is supported on the date of play.
