Can you play Breath of the Wild on PS5? Not as an official release, and not on a standard PS5. Nintendo lists the game for Nintendo Switch and says it is supported on Nintendo Switch 2; Sony’s PS5 compatibility guidance covers PS4 games, not Nintendo Switch titles. A GamesRadar report dated October 5, 2026 described an unofficial demonstration using emulation on a jailbroken PS5, but that is not supported compatibility.
Is Breath of the Wild officially available on PS5?
No. Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a Nintendo Switch game, released March 3, 2017. Its product listing says the game is supported on Nintendo Switch 2, with behavior consistent with the Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo’s game listing does not identify a PS5 edition.
Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games can be played on PS5. That guidance is about PS4 compatibility; it does not mean PS5 runs games made for Nintendo Switch. A Switch copy, whether physical or digital, is not a PS5 game.
Does Breath of the Wild work on PS5 without jailbreaking?
No supported method is established for playing the game on an unmodified PS5. The emulation demonstration reported by GamesRadar on October 5, 2026 involved a jailbroken console. It was an unofficial demonstration, not a PS5 release or evidence that the game will work reliably for ordinary PS5 owners.

Emulation means using software to run software on a device it was not originally made for. The GamesRadar report describes a particular setup; it does not establish a generally available, officially supported way to play the game on PS5. Nor does that report settle the legal status of a specific setup or the files used with it.

If you already own the base Switch game, Nintendo’s compatibility information says that base game is supported on Switch 2. The separately listed Switch 2 Edition is only playable on Switch 2; neither version converts a PS5 into supported hardware. Check Nintendo’s current listing and retailer information for availability and terms before buying.

What are the legal and account risks of PS5 emulation?
There are three separate questions: whether a platform officially supports the game, whether a particular modified-console setup works, and whether the conduct is lawful where you live. The first is clear: Nintendo identifies supported Switch hardware, not PS5. The GamesRadar report describes an unofficial jailbroken-PS5 demonstration but does not establish that setup’s reliability. The legal answer depends on jurisdiction and the specific conduct; the company policies below are not a universal court ruling.

Nintendo’s position on emulators and game copies
Nintendo’s US support FAQ says downloading and uploading pirate copies of Nintendo games is illegal. It also says some unauthorized emulators circumvent security measures, while defining emulator software more generally as software that lets software run on a device for which it was not originally made. These are Nintendo’s stated views and should not be read as a ruling that every emulator or every use is unlawful in every jurisdiction.

Sony’s US PS5 software terms
Sony’s US PS5 system software license prohibits using unauthorized, illegal, counterfeit, or modified hardware or software with system software; using tools to bypass PS5 encryption, security, or authentication; and using system software to make a PS5 accept unauthorized, illegal, or pirated software or hardware. The agreement says its restrictions are construed to the greatest extent permitted by the user’s jurisdiction. It is a US agreement, and applicable terms and law may differ by region.
Those policies are relevant if considering a jailbroken console, but they do not decide every question about a particular user’s actions. Do not assume that owning a game automatically authorizes every method of copying, modifying, or running it on another platform. For advice about a specific situation, consult a qualified legal professional in your jurisdiction.

How to play it on supported hardware
- Choose a supported console. Use a Nintendo Switch for the base Switch game, or a Nintendo Switch 2 for either the supported base game or the Switch 2 Edition.
- Choose the edition deliberately. The base game is listed for Switch and supported on Switch 2; the Switch 2 Edition is playable only on Switch 2 and includes performance and resolution enhancements.
- Check current availability. Use Nintendo’s official product listings or verify stock with a retailer. A PS5 purchase or PS5 compatibility setting does not provide a Switch edition.
