It’s best not to mix different brands of AA batteries in the same device. Duracell and Energizer both advise against mixing brands, battery types, or fresh and used cells. Their guidance identifies a risk of leakage and, for mixed types, reduced runtime; it does not mean every mixed-brand combination will fail.
Why manufacturers advise against mixing brands
Cells in one battery compartment may differ in age, condition, chemistry, or performance. Duracell says batteries of different brands or types, and old and new batteries, may leak when used together. Energizer likewise cautions that mixing brands, chemistries, or fresh and used cells can increase leakage potential and reduce runtime. Neither manufacturer quantifies that risk or says leakage is inevitable.
Duracell also notes that batteries can differ in how long they last and how much power they provide depending on their composition. That is a general caution about variation between cells, not a measured comparison of particular brands.
See Duracell’s battery-care guidance and Energizer’s Non-Rechargeable Batteries FAQ.
#1 Best Overall
- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: 24-pack of AA rechargeable NiMH batteries (2,000 mAh)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Ideal for remote controls, flashlights, clocks, and more
- LONG LASTING: Can be recharged up to 1000 times with minimal power loss
- LOW SELF DISCHARGE: Maintains 80% capacity for 2 years
- EASY USE & STORAGE: Has a shelf-life up to 5 years for everyday or emergency use; arrives pre-charged and ready to use
What to use instead
- Match the device’s requirements. Use the battery size and type specified by the device manufacturer. AA describes the size, not a single chemistry; do not assume every AA cell is interchangeable.
- Replace the full set together. Use a complete set of fresh cells rather than adding a new battery to older ones. Both manufacturers warn against mixing fresh and used cells, and Duracell recommends replacing all batteries in a device at once.
- Keep the set consistent. Use cells of the same brand and type in a compartment when practical, rather than combining different brands or chemistries.
If different brands are already in the device
- Turn the device off first, if practical.
- Remove the mixed set.
- Install a complete set of fresh batteries in the size and chemistry specified by the device maker.
If a battery looks swollen, damaged, hot, or is leaking, consult the battery and device manufacturers’ current safety instructions. Duracell provides leakage-cleanup advice on its battery-care page, but follow instructions appropriate to the battery chemistry and situation rather than applying a general cleanup method to every case.
Can you mix rechargeable and regular AA batteries?
Do not combine different battery types in the same device unless its manufacturer specifically says the combination is supported. Rechargeable AA cells have their own chemistry and charging requirements; check that the device supports that chemistry and use a charger designed for the cells.

- RELIABLE PERFORMANCE: 8-pack of AA rechargeable NiMH batteries (2,000 mAh)
- DEVICE COMPATIBLE: Ideal for remote controls, flashlights, clocks, and more
- LONG LASTING: Can be recharged up to 1000 times with minimal power loss
- LOW SELF DISCHARGE: Maintains 80% capacity for 2 years
- EASY USE & STORAGE: Shelf-life up to 5 years; great for everyday or emergency use; arrives pre-charged and ready to use
Using rechargeable NiMH cells across brands
Duracell says its chargers can charge other brands’ NiMH AA or AAA batteries, but it does not guarantee those batteries’ quality, safety, or performance. That statement applies to the stated Duracell charger context; it is not a guarantee that any charger will work with any cells.
Energizer’s rechargeable FAQ says mixing rechargeable batteries of different capacities can lead to lower-than-expected performance and reduce the lower-capacity cell’s cycle life. This is Energizer’s guidance, not a quantified result established for every device or battery combination. See Duracell’s Battery FAQs & Answers.

Can you mix Duracell and Energizer AA batteries?
The manufacturers’ general guidance is not to mix brands in one device. If the cells are already mixed, replace the whole set with fresh batteries of the size and type the device specifies; there is no source-supported exception for a particular brand pairing.
