Usually, no—not directly. Smart TV mirroring features generally send a phone or computer’s screen to a TV, not one TV’s built-in apps or picture to another TV. To show the same program on two TVs, use a separate HDMI source and suitable distribution equipment, or use an app-capable device connected to each display.

Why TV-to-TV mirroring usually does not work

A smart TV’s built-in apps run inside the TV. The TV’s HDMI ports are generally inputs for external devices, not outputs that send the TV’s picture elsewhere. Connecting an HDMI cable between two TVs therefore does not establish a path for the first TV to send its apps or screen to the second.

Manufacturer instructions for common mirroring and casting features describe a phone or tablet sending content to a compatible TV. They do not document a general feature for sending a TV’s built-in app picture to another TV. For example, Samsung’s Smart View guidance covers mirroring a mobile device to a TV, while LG’s guidance covers smartphone-to-TV sharing.

Choose the right signal path

What you want to show What to use Important limit
A phone screen on one TV A compatible phone-to-TV feature, such as Smart View, AirPlay, Miracast, or Google Cast Both devices must support the same method; exact requirements vary by model and feature.
Content from a phone app on one TV The app’s Cast or sharing function and a compatible TV or receiver This sends app content from the phone; it does not make the TV an output source for another TV.
One external HDMI device on two TVs An HDMI splitter or other suitable distribution equipment between the source and both TVs Check the equipment’s direction, supported formats, audio, copy protection, and compatibility with both displays.
An external HDMI source on a second TV without a long HDMI cable A compatible HDMI wireless transmitter and receiver Supported formats and practical range depend on the specific kit; wireless HDMI does not turn a TV’s built-in apps into an HDMI output.
A TV’s built-in app on another TV No general direct TV-to-TV method is established by the manufacturer guidance cited here If the same program is available through a separate streaming device, connect that device as the source instead. App availability and simultaneous-stream limits may apply.

How to show the same external source on two TVs

This method works with a separate device that sends video out through HDMI, such as a compatible computer, receiver, game console, or streaming device. It does not use the first TV as the source.

  1. Identify the source. Confirm that the device playing the program has an HDMI output. A TV’s built-in app is not an external HDMI source.
  2. Choose distribution equipment. For a wired setup, use an HDMI splitter or distribution device designed to feed two displays. For a wireless link, use a compatible HDMI transmitter and receiver.
  3. Connect in the correct direction. Connect the source’s HDMI output to the distribution device’s input. Connect each output to an HDMI input on a TV. For wireless HDMI, connect the source to the transmitter and the receiving TV to the receiver.
  4. Check the equipment specifications. Confirm support for the source’s resolution and refresh rate, audio format, copy protection, and both TVs’ capabilities. For wireless equipment, also check the stated operating conditions and range for that specific kit.
  5. Select the correct TV inputs. On both televisions, choose the HDMI input connected to the distribution equipment, then start playback on the external source.

Epson’s WirelessHD setup instructions show this source-to-display arrangement: HDMI sources connect to a transmitter, and the transmitter’s HDMI output feeds a TV or other display. That example supports distributing an external source; it does not establish that a TV’s HDMI input can send its built-in app picture to another TV.

Phone mirroring and app casting are different

Mirror a phone screen

Screen mirroring sends a compatible phone’s screen to a TV. The phone is the sender and the TV is the receiver. Samsung describes Smart View and SmartThings for mobile-to-TV mirroring; LG documents smartphone sharing and AirPlay on supported models. Wired phone-to-TV adapters may also be available, depending on the devices.

Compatibility is model- and software-dependent. Sony’s compatibility guide says functions vary by TV model and notes that Google TV models released after 2020 do not support the Screen mirroring function. That limitation applies to the named function and models; it should not be generalized to every Sony TV or every casting protocol.

Cast content from an app

With app casting, the sender selects content in a supported app and directs it to a compatible display or receiver. This is not necessarily a mirror of everything on the sender’s screen, and it is not TV-to-TV output. Google’s Cast setup guidance lists a compatible display, power, secure Wi-Fi, and a compatible phone or tablet as setup requirements. For app casting, Google’s instructions require the sending device and receiving Cast device to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Availability and performance can also depend on device, network, and area.

Check compatibility before buying anything

  • Write down the exact model numbers of both TVs and the source device.
  • Decide whether playback comes from a built-in TV app or a separate device with an HDMI output.
  • For phone mirroring or casting, confirm that the sender and receiver support the same feature. Do not assume that similarly named protocols are interchangeable.
  • For HDMI distribution, verify that the product is an input-to-multiple-output device and that it supports the formats, audio, and copy protection your setup needs.
  • For wireless HDMI, check the specific transmitter/receiver kit’s supported formats, operating conditions, and practical range rather than assuming all kits behave alike.
  • If you need a built-in app on both TVs, check whether the app is available on a separate streaming device for each TV. Account rules, content rights, and simultaneous-stream limits may affect playback.

Troubleshoot a phone or computer that cannot find the TV

  1. Confirm that the TV and sender support the same mirroring or casting method, using the documentation for their exact models.
  2. For Google Cast, put the sending device and Cast receiver on the same Wi-Fi network and verify that the app supports casting.
  3. Make sure the receiving feature is enabled on the TV and accept any permission prompt.
  4. Check network connectivity and restart the sender, receiver, or router if the devices still do not appear.
  5. Consult model-specific support if the feature is missing or unavailable. Samsung lists network mismatch, mirroring not being enabled at both ends, and a missing TV permission as possible causes.
