You can leave a Samsung group chat only when the conversation and messaging app support it. In Google Messages, an eligible RCS group may offer More > Group details > Leave group. SMS/MMS groups generally do not provide the same self-leave option. In Samsung Messages, Samsung says you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else; you can mute or delete the thread on your phone instead.
Leave an RCS group in Google Messages
On a Samsung phone using Google Messages, open the group conversation and check for the leave control:
- Open Google Messages and select the group conversation.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu), then Group details.
- If Leave group appears, tap it and follow any confirmation prompt.
This path is available only when the app and conversation support leaving. Google describes RCS group features, and its Android RCS information says users can leave groups; Samsung Members moderator guidance identifies the menu path. Google’s group-help page does not document the self-leave steps, and the wording or availability may vary by software version.
Why “Leave group” may be missing
The key distinction is the group’s messaging protocol, not simply which app is installed. Google Messages supports different group behaviors for RCS and SMS/MMS conversations. Google explains that adding a contact without RCS availability can result in an MMS chat, and Samsung says RCS requires all participants to have RCS enabled. Switching to Google Messages does not, by itself, make an SMS/MMS group leaveable.

- Check the conversation details: Open More > Group details and see whether the leave action is offered.
- Check RCS availability: Google Messages can show an RCS tag for RCS contacts when starting a chat. A group’s capabilities depend on the participants and service, so a missing leave control may indicate the group does not support it.
- Ask the group creator or another participant: If the group’s service supports removing members, ask someone who can manage participants to remove you.

What you can do in Samsung Messages or SMS/MMS
Samsung Support states: “You cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by another person; you can only delete the chat or mute notifications.” Muting stops alerts from that conversation, while deleting clears its thread from your device. Neither action changes your membership in the group.

Google likewise distinguishes SMS/MMS group management from RCS: its group controls do not let you remove a participant from an SMS or MMS group. If your goal is to stop receiving the group’s messages, ask the creator or another participant to remove you if their app and group service allow it.

Choose the option that matches your goal
| Option | Changes group membership? | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Leave group in Google Messages | Yes, if the control is available for the RCS group | You want to stop participating in a supported group. |
| Mute or snooze | No | You want fewer notifications but may still want the conversation. |
| Delete the conversation | No; removes the local thread | You want to clear the thread from your message list. |
| Ask someone to remove you | Possibly; depends on the group protocol and app | No self-leave control is available. |
Google documents snoozing conversations in its help material; Samsung documents muting and deleting in its group-text guidance. These actions affect what you see or hear on your phone, not whether the group service still includes you.

Samsung’s U.S. support notice says Samsung Messages is discontinued for Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher. The notice gives July 6, 2026 as the date after which sending stops, except for emergency calls or contacts; it says Android 11 or lower is not affected by that end-of-service notice. Samsung recommends Google Messages for Android 12 or higher. This is U.S.-market guidance, not a statement about every country, and screens or settings can vary by carrier, device, and software version.
