Usually, yes—for a healthy, compatible Ryobi lithium-ion battery and the correct Ryobi charger. Ryobi says its charger electronics monitor the pack, balance its cells and stop active charging when the battery reaches 100 percent. That means a normal overnight session should not keep forcing current into a full battery. However, Ryobi model manuals also tell you to disconnect the charger when charging is complete or when it is not in use. The safest routine is therefore to charge overnight only in a suitable, supervised setup, then unplug the charger and remove the battery in the morning.
Do not charge a pack that is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, frozen or otherwise damaged. Also confirm that the charger and battery belong to the same Ryobi voltage platform; 18V ONE+, 40V and 80V systems are not interchangeable.
What happens when a Ryobi battery becomes full?
Ryobi’s charger guidance states that a lithium-ion charger must include overcharge protection that stops charging when the battery reaches 100 percent. Its charger electronics monitor battery condition and balance the cells while charging. In practical terms, a compatible charger should switch out of active charging rather than continuously pumping energy into a full pack.

That protection answers the narrow question—whether the battery will be overcharged simply because it remains connected for several extra hours. It does not make every overnight arrangement safe. The battery, charger, power outlet and room still need to be suitable, and the pack must not be defective. Protection circuitry also does not remove the manufacturer’s instruction to disconnect equipment after charging.

Check the voltage platform before connecting anything
Ryobi batteries and chargers are designed for specific platforms. A connector that appears physically similar is not proof of electrical compatibility. Match the voltage family and the exact battery types listed for the charger.

If you are unsure, read the model number printed on the battery and charger and check the compatibility list in the relevant Ryobi manual. Never use a charger merely because its plug fits or because it is described generically as a “Ryobi charger.”
How to charge overnight as safely as possible

- Inspect the battery. Look for a cracked housing, swelling, leakage, corrosion, a burned smell or terminals that are visibly damaged. Do not connect a suspect pack. If it was submerged, dropped hard or exposed to freezing conditions, follow the battery manual’s fault and recovery instructions instead of trying to revive it.
- Verify the charger and platform. Confirm that the charger is genuine or explicitly listed for the battery’s Ryobi platform and chemistry. For an 18V ONE+ pack, the charger instructions must list that type of lithium-ion battery. Do not mix 18V, 40V and 80V equipment.
- Choose a suitable location. Charge indoors in a dry, ventilated area on the hard, stable surface specified by the manual. Keep the charger away from rain, sinks, condensation, combustible clutter, direct heat and enclosed spaces where warmth can build up. Do not cover the charger or battery.
- Check the temperature. Start only when the battery and room are within the temperature range stated in the particular manual. A pack that has just been used in hot sun, left in a freezing vehicle or stored in a cold shed may need to return to the permitted range before charging.
- Seat the pack correctly. Slide the battery fully into the charger until it locks and check the indicator pattern. An indicator showing a fault, alternating error lights or no normal charging signal means you should stop and consult the manual rather than leave it unattended.
- Use a sound power outlet. Connect the charger directly to a properly installed outlet unless the manual specifically permits an approved extension arrangement. Do not use a damaged cord, loose adapter, overloaded power strip or outlet that becomes hot.
- Keep the area observable. An overnight charge should not be placed under bedding, inside a vehicle or in a locked outdoor box. Leave ventilation openings clear and make sure nobody can knock the charger onto a wet or unstable surface.
- Finish in the morning. When charging is complete, unplug the charger and remove the battery. Check that the pack is not abnormally hot, swollen or leaking before putting it into service.
What Ryobi’s manuals say about disconnecting
The practical reason to remove the pack in the morning is not that a normal compatible charger will suddenly overcharge it. It is that Ryobi’s written instructions are more conservative than simply saying “leave it connected indefinitely.” The RC18120 instructions direct users to remove the product plug from the power socket when the charger is not in use. Ryobi’s 80V OP80RM2 manual gives a specific completion sequence: “When the tool or battery pack is fully charged, disconnect the charger from the tool or battery pack, then disconnect the charger from the power supply.”
Those directions establish the preferred endpoint: charging is a temporary operation, not a storage method. If you discover a full battery still connected after sleeping, disconnect it when you notice it; there is no need to deliberately discharge it first. For routine use, set a reminder, use a timer that is allowed by the manual, or charge earlier in the evening so the charger can be unplugged before you go to bed.
Situations in which you should not leave the battery charging
- Visible or suspected damage: A cracked, punctured, swollen, leaking or burned pack can behave unpredictably. Do not tape it up and continue charging. Keep it away from ignition sources and follow local battery-disposal guidance or Ryobi service instructions.
- Freezing conditions: Ryobi battery instructions warn against charging a frozen pack. Let it return to the manual’s permitted temperature naturally; do not heat it with a radiator, oven, hair dryer or other improvised source.
- Excessive heat: Stop if the battery or charger becomes unusually hot, smells of solvent or burnt plastic, discolors or repeatedly interrupts charging. Unplug it if safe to do so and allow it to cool on a noncombustible surface.
- Moisture: Do not charge in rain, a damp shed, a bathroom or anywhere condensation can reach the contacts. Drying the outside does not prove that water has not entered the pack.
- Unknown or modified hardware: Avoid counterfeit, altered or unlisted chargers and packs. Their protection and communication circuitry may not match the battery.
- Repeated charger faults: A fault indicator, buzzing, damaged insulation or an outlet that trips repeatedly is a reason to stop, not to restart the session and leave it overnight.
Temperature, ventilation and surface requirements
Temperature is both a charging-safety issue and a battery-life issue. The exact permitted charging range varies by model, so the manual for your charger and pack takes precedence. Do not infer a safe range from the weather forecast or from another Ryobi product. A battery that feels warm after tool use may be normal, but it should not be connected while heat is still excessive.

Place the charger on the hard, stable surface specified by the instructions, with its vents unobstructed. Keep paper, sawdust, solvents, fabrics and other combustible materials away from the charging area. A dry indoor location with ordinary air circulation is preferable to an unheated garage that can freeze or a closed cabinet that traps heat. Never charge beneath a pillow or blanket, where airflow is blocked and a developing problem could go unnoticed.

Charging overnight for immediate use is different from leaving a battery connected for weeks. Ryobi battery instructions cited for long-term storage say that a pack stored longer than 30 days should be kept below 27°C (80°F) at approximately 30% to 50% charge. That partial-charge recommendation is for storage, not for a pack you need fully charged tomorrow.
If a tool will sit unused for a month or more, remove the battery from the charger and tool, let it reach the recommended partial-charge level, and store it in a cool, dry place below the stated temperature limit. Check the pack periodically according to its manual. Do not use continuous connection to maintain 100 percent during a long break; that is contrary to the cited storage guidance.

Charger ratings and charging time
Ryobi’s UK charger guidance lists 18V ONE+ examples with 1.5A, 2.0A and 5.0A charge rates. The amp rating affects how quickly a compatible pack can charge; it does not change the requirement to use the correct platform and follow the model’s instructions. A higher-rated charger is not automatically suitable for every battery, and the printed rate is not a promise that every pack will charge at that speed under all conditions.
Charge indicators can also pause because the pack is too hot, too cold or undergoing cell balancing. Do not assume a pause means the battery is full, and do not repeatedly remove and reinsert a pack that is reporting a fault. Use the indicator legend in the charger manual.

What to do if something goes wrong overnight
The charger is still showing a charge in the morning
Some packs take longer because of capacity, temperature or balancing. Check the indicator meaning in the manual. If the session has exceeded the expected time by a wide margin, or the charger and pack are hot, unplug them when safe and stop using that combination until the instructions identify the cause.

The battery is hot, swollen or leaking
Do not touch leaking material with bare skin and do not continue charging. If it is safe, disconnect the power without squeezing or puncturing the pack, move people away from the area and contact Ryobi support or your local hazardous-battery disposal service. Do not place a damaged lithium-ion pack in household rubbish.
The charger shows a fault or the outlet trips
Disconnect the charger, inspect the cord, outlet and contacts without scraping or bending them, and consult the fault section for that model. If the same fault returns with a known-good compatible setup, retire the charger or battery for service rather than bypassing the protection.
You forgot to unplug it
Disconnect the charger and remove the battery when you remember. A single unattended overnight session with an undamaged pack and compatible charger is not evidence that the battery has been ruined, but repeated long periods at full charge are not the intended storage practice.

Bottom line for Ryobi ONE+ owners
You can normally charge a genuine, undamaged Ryobi lithium-ion battery overnight on the compatible charger when the setup is dry, ventilated and within the manual’s temperature limits. The charger should stop active charging at 100 percent. Treat that as an overcharge safeguard, not permission to leave the battery connected indefinitely: Ryobi’s instructions say to disconnect after charging and to use a 30%–50% charge level for storage longer than 30 days. Match the platform, inspect the pack, and remove it from the charger in the morning.
