Yes. A Windows 10 computer does not stop working because support ended. Microsoft ended standard support for covered Windows 10 editions on October 14, 2025, so the system no longer receives its normal security fixes, software updates or technical support. You can keep using it, but its security position gradually worsens as newly discovered Windows vulnerabilities remain unpatched. Microsoft’s support guidance confirms both the continued functionality and the end of standard servicing.
Your practical choices are to upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11, enroll a qualifying personal device in Extended Security Updates (ESU) where the program is available, replace an ineligible computer, or continue without ESU while accepting additional risk. The right choice depends on hardware eligibility, location, how sensitive your work is and how long you need the computer.
What ended on October 14, 2025?
Microsoft’s lifecycle notice covers Windows 10 version 22H2 and listed long-term-servicing editions, including Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, Enterprise 2015 LTSB and IoT Enterprise LTSB 2015. For those editions, October 14, 2025 was the end of the normal support lifecycle. The lifecycle announcement identifies the editions and date.

- No regular Windows security updates or fixes are supplied.
- No normal feature or software updates are supplied.

Some separate products have their own schedules. An application can continue to launch even when the operating system underneath it is no longer supported.
Will a Windows 10 PC still work?
Yes. Existing programs, files, printers and internet connections generally continue to work as they did before the cutoff. You can sign in, create documents, browse the web and use installed applications. The important distinction is between working and remaining protected: an unpatched operating system can contain vulnerabilities that criminals discover after Microsoft has stopped issuing fixes.
Microsoft specifically warns that antivirus software by itself is not a replacement for operating-system security updates. Antivirus may detect known malicious files, but it cannot repair a Windows vulnerability or guarantee protection against a newly developed attack. Microsoft’s Windows end-of-support guidance explains this limitation.

Do not buy a replacement computer until you check whether the current one qualifies for Windows 11. Microsoft says an eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 PC that meets Windows 11’s minimum hardware requirements can upgrade at no charge.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Install all available Windows 10 updates and look for a Windows 11 upgrade offer.
- Check the installed release by pressing Windows key + R, entering
winver, and confirming that the release is version 22H2. - Run Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool. It reports whether the hardware meets the Windows 11 requirements and, if not, which requirement fails.
- Back up documents, photos, browser data and any application-specific files before starting an upgrade. Keep the backup disconnected or otherwise protected from ransomware while the upgrade runs.
The upgrade path and eligibility information are described in Microsoft’s Windows 10 support article and the Windows lifecycle announcement. If Windows Update does not offer Windows 11, use PC Health Check rather than assuming that the machine is too old; an update backlog, edition issue or other compatibility condition can also prevent the offer from appearing.
Option 1: Upgrade the existing PC to Windows 11
For a compatible Windows 10 version 22H2 computer, the upgrade is Microsoft’s supported continuation of the device. It preserves the existing hardware investment and returns the machine to a supported Windows release. Before accepting the upgrade, verify that critical applications, peripherals and accessibility tools work with Windows 11, and confirm that you have enough free storage for the installation and rollback files.
If PC Health Check reports an unmet hardware requirement, do not force an unsupported installation on a computer that handles sensitive work. Unsupported configurations can lack a supported update path and may create driver or reliability problems. Use the result to decide whether ESU or replacement is more appropriate.
Option 2: Use Extended Security Updates as a bridge
Consumer ESU is not a return to full Windows 10 support. It supplies certain critical and important security updates for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 personal devices. Enrollment does not add feature improvements, product enhancements or technical support. Microsoft’s ESU description states those exclusions explicitly.

Eligibility, enrollment methods and the final update date depend on country. The United States and United Kingdom pages currently show different terms:
| Region and source | Eligibility and preparation | Published end date | Enrollment terms shown | What ESU does not provide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Personal-use Windows 10 version 22H2 devices; confirm the offer in Windows Settings. | October 13, 2026, on the U.S. guidance page. | No additional cost when syncing PC settings; alternatively 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points or a one-time $30 USD payment (or local equivalent) plus applicable tax. | No feature updates, product improvements or technical support. |
| United Kingdom | Home, Professional, Pro Education and Workstations devices on version 22H2, with the latest Windows update and licensing preparation package installed; an administrator Microsoft account is required. Commercial kiosk, Active Directory-joined, Microsoft Entra-joined or MDM-enrolled scenarios are excluded. The page notes an exception for Entra-registered devices. | October 12, 2027, on the UK guidance page. | Current enrollment and pricing are presented locally in Windows; the UK page does not establish the U.S. price or reward-points terms. | No feature improvements, product enhancements or technical support. |
The U.S. date is already past the current date of October 16, 2026, so a U.S. reader should not assume enrollment remains available merely because an older page listed that date. Open the ESU enrollment screen in Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and follow the terms displayed for your account and location. A UK or other-region offer must likewise be verified locally; do not apply one country’s price, eligibility rules or end date worldwide.
Consumer ESU is also different from organizational or enterprise licensing. If a computer belongs to an employer, school or managed fleet, contact the administrator. A device joined to directory services, enrolled in mobile-device management or used in a commercial kiosk arrangement may not qualify for the consumer program.

Option 3: Continue without ESU
Technically, you can keep running Windows 10 without ESU. This is the least protected option because the operating system will not receive the standard security fixes that ended with the lifecycle. The risk is not a date-based shutdown; it is the accumulation of unpatched weaknesses over time.

If you choose this path temporarily, reduce exposure while planning a supported destination:
- Keep reliable, tested backups of personal files and a recovery method for the machine.
- Install updates for browsers, productivity applications, firmware and drivers whenever their vendors still support Windows 10.
- Use a standard (non-administrator) account for everyday work and enable the built-in firewall.
- Avoid opening unexpected attachments, pirated software and unknown downloads; phishing remains a major route into unsupported systems.
- Do not use an unpatched PC for banking, work credentials or other high-value activity when a supported device is available.
- Plan a deadline for upgrading or replacing the computer instead of treating antivirus as a permanent substitute for Windows updates.
What happens to Microsoft 365 and Office?
Application support does not end on exactly the same day as Windows support. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 Apps continue to run on Windows 10 and will receive security updates there through October 10, 2028. Microsoft nevertheless recommends moving to Windows 11 to reduce the possibility of performance and reliability problems over time. The Microsoft 365 and Office guidance contains that date and recommendation.
| Product | What to expect on Windows 10 |
|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Apps | Continue to run; Microsoft says security updates on Windows 10 continue through October 10, 2028. The operating-system risks remain separate. |
| Office 2016 and Office 2019 | Support ended October 14, 2025 across operating systems. Existing installations may launch, but they are unsupported. |
| Office 2021 and Office LTSC 2021 | Continue to run on Windows 10 but are no longer supported there. |
| Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 | Continue to run on Windows 10 but are no longer supported there. |
“Runs” therefore does not mean “receives fixes.” If an Office program stops activating or a new cloud feature requires a newer operating system, that is an application or service decision rather than evidence that Windows 10 itself has shut down.
When replacing the computer makes sense
Microsoft identifies a new Windows 11 PC as an option for hardware that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements. Replacement is also reasonable when the computer is unreliable, lacks modern connectivity, has a failing battery or cannot run the applications you need. It is not automatically necessary for a machine that passes PC Health Check and can be upgraded.

Before purchasing, compare the replacement against your actual workload:
- Confirm the processor, memory, storage and graphics meet the applications you use.
- Check portability, screen size, ports, webcam quality and battery expectations if you need a laptop.
- Verify that files, browser passwords and license keys can be transferred.
- Budget for data migration, accessories and any software that must be reinstalled.
- Use Microsoft’s trade-in or recycling information, or an appropriate local recycling service, when disposing of the old device and remove personal data first.
A decision guide
| Your situation | Most sensible next step | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 10 version 22H2, hardware passes PC Health Check | Upgrade to Windows 11 after a backup. | You regain a supported operating system without replacing working hardware. |
| Hardware fails the Windows 11 check but the PC is still dependable | Use locally available ESU, if eligible, as a transition; otherwise plan replacement. | ESU can provide limited security coverage, but it is temporary and not full support. |
| Personal U.S. device after the U.S. ESU date shown above | Check Windows Settings for current availability and prepare to upgrade or replace. | The published October 13, 2026 date has passed. |
| Managed business, school or kiosk device | Ask the organization’s administrator about its licensing and migration plan. | Consumer ESU rules may exclude managed or commercial configurations. |
| Older PC used for low-risk, offline tasks only | Continue only with backups and a clear replacement deadline. | Lower exposure does not remove the absence of operating-system security fixes. |
Common problems and how to handle them
Windows 11 is not offered in Windows Update
Confirm that Windows 10 is on version 22H2, install pending updates, then run PC Health Check. Record the stated incompatibility instead of repeatedly refreshing Windows Update. A failed requirement means you should evaluate ESU or replacement.
The ESU enrollment option is missing
Check your country, edition, version and account type. Install the latest Windows update and any required licensing preparation package. Managed, directory-joined or MDM-enrolled devices may be excluded from consumer ESU. If the local Settings page does not offer enrollment, do not rely on a price or date published for another country.
Office still opens, so you assume the PC is supported
Office and Microsoft 365 have independent support policies. An application continuing to launch does not restore Windows security updates. Use the product-specific dates above when planning migration.
You installed antivirus and consider the problem solved
Antivirus is useful defense-in-depth, but Microsoft says it cannot substitute for operating-system updates. Keep the upgrade, ESU or replacement decision active.
