There is no universal yes-or-no answer. What happens depends on the country, your bank’s conversion notice and your account type. In Pakistan, State Bank of Pakistan rules provide options for customers who object, but the process differs for current accounts and savings or fixed accounts. Check your bank’s notice before assuming your account will stay conventional, convert, or move to another branch.

What happens if you do not want your account converted?

Start with the rules where your account is held. A branch conversion does not, by itself, establish that every customer must accept an Islamic account or can keep the same conventional account at the same branch.

In Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan’s 2024 branch-conversion criteria say that an account may be converted from conventional to Islamic with the account holder’s consent. If the customer dissents, the bank may offer a transfer to another conventional branch or account closure, according to the customer’s choice. The available arrangement and instructions should be confirmed with the bank handling your account.

Pakistan: how consent and non-response are handled

The SBP criteria distinguish between an explicit objection and no response. They also treat current accounts differently from savings and fixed accounts. The applicable process is described in the SBP’s October 2024 branch-conversion criteria.

If you object

You may be offered a transfer to another conventional branch or closure of the account, according to your choice. Contact the bank before the notice deadline to learn how to register your objection and what transfer arrangements are available.

If you do not respond

  • Current account: The criteria allow conversion on a deemed-acceptance basis after the specified efforts to seek consent and notices. Silence should not be treated as a reliable way to keep the account conventional.
  • Savings or fixed account: If the customer does not respond, the account is to be parked in a virtual conventional cost centre or transferred to the nearest conventional branch, with the customer informed.

The SBP amended the notice periods on June 16, 2026. Its circular reduced the period for informing the public and account holders from three and a half months to two months, and shortened the interval between the two notices used for deemed acceptance of current-account conversion from 30 days to 15 days. These are Pakistan-specific regulatory periods; consult the bank’s notice for the dates and steps that apply to your account. Read the SBP’s June 2026 amendment.

Why the country and account terms matter

Pakistan’s SBP rules do not establish what a bank must do in another country. Islamic banking transitions can also involve product changes beyond the branch itself. For example, Bank Negara Malaysia’s 2014 announcement concerned how customer funds under Malaysia’s Islamic Financial Services Act were classified as deposits or investment accounts. It said institutions would explain the differences and let customers choose whether to retain deposits or move to investment accounts. That is a historical Malaysia example, not current global guidance or a general right for customers elsewhere. Read Bank Negara Malaysia’s 2014 announcement.

What to confirm with your bank before deciding

Use the contact details in the conversion notice and ask for answers about your specific account. In particular, confirm:

Rank #3
  • Whether your account will convert, transfer to another conventional branch, or close.
  • The response deadline and what happens if you do not reply.
  • Whether the process differs for your current, savings, or fixed account.
  • Which conventional branch can hold your account if you decline, and how to request a transfer.
  • Whether the account number, card, digital access, standing instructions, direct debits, or linked financing will change.
  • If an Islamic account is proposed, what contract and profit or return terms apply and where those terms are disclosed.
  • Which regulator governs your account and how to raise a complaint if the notice does not explain your options.

Do not assume that account numbers, cards, payments, financing, or online access will remain unchanged. The outcome depends on the bank’s arrangements and the terms it gives you.
