Ubuntu is a plausible choice for the HP ProBook 440 G8, but the available certification evidence is for listed configurations and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS—not Ubuntu 25.10. More importantly, Ubuntu 25.10’s nine-month standard support period had elapsed by 4 October 2026. For a new installation today, choose a release Canonical currently lists as supported, such as Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, unless you have a specific reason and maintenance plan for using 25.10.

Does the HP ProBook 440 G8 work with Ubuntu?

Canonical’s certified laptop search includes HP ProBook 440 G8 entries, and its Ubuntu 20.04 LTS filtered results associate the model with that release. This is useful evidence that Ubuntu has been certified on listed ProBook 440 G8 configurations. It is not a blanket certification for every unit, nor proof of certification for Ubuntu 25.10.

Configuration matters. A model-family name does not identify every wireless card, fingerprint reader, storage device, display, or regional SKU. HP’s driver page shows Windows 10 and Windows 11 choices for model examples and warns that HP may not provide drivers for an operating system it does not list. That describes HP’s support-page coverage; it does not establish that Linux cannot run on the laptop.

Before relying on a specific component, find the exact product number and check the machine’s installed hardware. HP’s general Linux user guide points readers to Ubuntu’s certified hardware search and recommends keeping BIOS and drivers current. It is guidance, not a component-by-component compatibility guarantee for every 440 G8.

Is Ubuntu 25.10 still supported?

No. Canonical classifies Ubuntu 25.10 as an interim release; interim releases receive nine months of maintenance. Ubuntu 25.10 was announced on 9 October 2025, so its standard maintenance window had passed by 4 October 2026. The Ubuntu releases index listed Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS at that date. Check the index again before installing because release and support information can change.

For a new laptop setup, a currently supported release is the safer choice for ongoing security maintenance. Use 25.10 only if you have a concrete reason to install that specific release and understand that its standard maintenance has ended.

What Ubuntu 25.10 included

Canonical announced Ubuntu 25.10, code-named Questing Quokka, on 9 October 2025, naming GNOME 49 and Linux kernel 6.17 among its release features. Those are release-level details, not evidence that each ProBook component works correctly. The announcement also described TPM-backed full-disk encryption as experimental and not recommended for production environments at launch; do not treat it as a routine production default on that basis.

The official release announcement called the release “a statement of intent for the next Ubuntu LTS in 2026.” That statement describes Canonical’s release direction, not compatibility with this laptop.

Choose the right installation image

If you are following a 25.10-specific setup, the official Ubuntu 25.10 image page lists a 5.3 GB AMD64 desktop ISO. For the Intel-based ProBook 440 G8 family, the AMD64 desktop image is the relevant desktop option; still check your exact product number and processor. Ubuntu describes the desktop image as the one most users need. A 16 GB USB drive is a practical choice based on the ISO size, not an official minimum capacity.

The same page lists a server installer, but notes that it does not install a graphical interface. It is therefore not the natural choice for an ordinary laptop desktop setup.

Prepare before installing

  • Back up your files. Decide whether you intend to replace the existing operating system or preserve it. Do not start until you know how you will restore important data.
  • Identify the exact laptop. Record the product number and, where possible, the installed wireless/network, storage, display, and optional security components. Certification for a listed configuration does not settle behavior on every SKU.
  • Use current installation directions. Follow Ubuntu’s current installation documentation for writing the USB, checking the downloaded image against Canonical’s published checksums, booting the installer, Secure Boot, and partition choices. Consult HP’s current maintenance guide for model-specific hardware and firmware procedures.
  • Keep the recovery path in mind. Choose a clean install or an approach that preserves an existing system only after considering your backup and recovery readiness. There is no single partition plan established for every ProBook 440 G8.

Install and verify your own configuration

Once you have chosen a supported Ubuntu release—or deliberately selected 25.10 with a maintenance plan—use the current Ubuntu installer instructions for the exact USB-writing and boot steps. The available documentation cited here does not establish a particular BIOS key sequence, boot-menu label, or partition layout for every ProBook 440 G8, so do not assume one set of steps applies to all units.

After installation, apply the updates available for your chosen supported release and check the devices you depend on: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, camera, suspend and resume, external displays, USB-C, and the fingerprint reader if fitted. Also check firmware update behavior on your particular machine. If you need help diagnosing a problem, provide the laptop product number and relevant component IDs; avoid trying to install Windows-only HP packages in Linux.

If the display is blank or unusable while Linux starts, HP’s general Linux guide describes nomodeset as a possible boot-parameter workaround. Treat it as a diagnostic troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed or permanent fix for a graphics problem.
