Tom’s Guide’s 10-question quiz asks you to identify an ’80s movie from a small, zoomed-in piece of its poster—not a full image or a readable title. Use the colors, costumes, characters, and other visual details to choose among four answers for each question.
How the poster quiz works
Each question shows a cropped section of a movie poster. The challenge is to recognize the film from what remains visible, rather than relying on the complete poster or its title. Tom’s Guide describes a mix of science fiction, action, horror, and comedy, with four possible answers per question.
Look first at distinctive colors and shapes, then at any visible costume or character detail. Those clues may bring a familiar image to mind even when the crop leaves out the most obvious parts of the artwork. The quiz has 10 questions, so there are several chances to test your memory of the decade’s movie imagery. Take the Tom’s Guide quiz.

The American Film Institute’s Get the Picture is a separate daily guessing game: identify a movie from one image. AFI’s August 16, 2023 announcement said the game had passed two million plays since launching in 2022 and was free to play at that time; that is a historical milestone, not a current play count.

Why a small image can be a useful clue
A poster is designed to suggest a film through a compact visual idea. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History Archives Center describes posters as aiming to capture a film’s essence in a defining image. Its collection finding aid also notes that, as home video expanded from the early 1980s onward, posters were used to market films in video stores. Recognizing a cropped poster therefore draws on both movie memory and the visual language used to promote films.
