No—not legally by downloading or installing an unauthorized copy. In the United States, loading an illegal copy of software onto a computer can constitute copyright infringement. If you want to edit without buying a license, use the official VEGAS Pro trial or a legal free editor such as DaVinci Resolve. The legal explanation below is U.S.-specific; laws elsewhere may differ.
Why an unauthorized copy can infringe copyright
The product once commonly called Sony Vegas is now branded VEGAS Pro. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that computer software is protected by copyright and that loading an illegal software copy onto a computer is an unauthorized reproduction. A narrow archival-copy rule does not make an unauthorized download lawful. The Copyright Office describes that rule for a legal owner of a program copy, subject to conditions and applicable license terms; it does not grant permission to download or distribute someone else’s copy.
What legal consequences are possible in the United States?
Civil damages are not an automatic fine
The Copyright Office says statutory damages may reach $30,000 per work, or up to $150,000 per work if willful infringement is proven. These are potential statutory ceilings, not a bill every person who installs an unauthorized copy will necessarily receive. Actual exposure depends on the facts and applicable law. Criminal infringement depends on additional conditions
U.S. law provides for criminal penalties for willful infringement when specified conditions are met. Those conditions include certain circumstances involving commercial advantage or private financial gain and thresholds related to reproduction or distribution. Legal ways to edit without an unauthorized copy
Use the official VEGAS Pro trial
VEGAS Creative Software’s pricing page advertises a 15-day trial with access to all features. The vendor also says a license can be used on up to two computers. Choose a free editor

For a paid license, use the official VEGAS purchase page and review the current regional price, renewal details, and license terms. Do not assume an unofficial download or a seller’s description establishes that a copy is properly licensed.

Which option should you choose?
- Need to try VEGAS Pro: start with the official trial and check its current terms.
- Need a no-cost editor: download the free version of DaVinci Resolve from Blackmagic Design.
- Need VEGAS Pro beyond the trial: review the official license options and terms.
Before switching editors, consider whether your computer is compatible, whether the tools you need are available in the version you plan to use, how you will learn the workflow, and whether existing projects need to move between applications. The cited official pages establish the trial and free version, but do not provide a complete feature-by-feature comparison.
