Sometimes—but usually not by selling your existing personal-data profile for a dependable price. The phrase “get paid for your data” most often describes rewards for joining a research panel, answering surveys, or letting software measure device or purchase activity. Those incentives are payment for participation under a program’s terms, not a reliable valuation of all the information a company may collect about you.
What “get paid for your data” means
There is no standard consumer marketplace established by the sources here that pays a dependable price for an individual’s existing personal-data profile. In practice, the phrase usually points to a few different activities:
- Research participation: answering surveys, reporting purchases, or providing feedback in exchange for points or other rewards.
- Device-usage measurement: installing software that records specified activity so a research company can study how devices are used.
- Data-broker activity: businesses collecting and selling consumer information to other companies. This category does not, by itself, mean consumers receive a share of the proceeds.
- Privacy-rights requests: tools that help people ask companies to delete information or stop certain sales. These are privacy controls, not payment programs.
California defines a data broker as a business that knowingly collects and sells personal information about consumers with whom it has no direct relationship. The definition describes the business, not a consumer payout scheme. California Privacy Protection Agency: Data Broker Registry

What the rewards may actually be worth
Nielsen Computer & Mobile Panel
Nielsen’s U.S. FAQ advertises up to $60 per year in reward points for eligible participants: up to $30 for mobile and up to $30 for computer. This is the program’s stated maximum, not guaranteed cash or an independent estimate of earnings. The FAQ also mentions sign-up games, sweepstakes, and additional survey opportunities; a sweepstakes is a chance to win, not guaranteed income. Check the current FAQ for eligibility and terms before joining, since offers can change. Nielsen Computer & Mobile Panel FAQ

NIQ Consumer Panel
NIQ’s Consumer Panel Services privacy notice, dated June 1, 2026, says panel rewards are allocated through points that can be redeemed for gift vouchers and sometimes cash-equivalent gift cards. The value and availability vary by study and location. NIQ says it does not assign a specific dollar value to personal information. NIQ Consumer Panel Services Privacy Notice
For the NIQ mobile app and panel specifically, its notice effective June 2026 says registration may request household contact and demographic details, while use of the app may involve purchase information and survey responses about views, preferences, and shopping habits. This describes that program, not every research panel. NIQ Consumer Panel mobile application privacy notice

What information might be involved?
The information depends on the program. Nielsen’s FAQ says its panel software collects visited URLs, time spent on URLs, and general device activity, and says it does not collect user IDs or passwords. Those are Nielsen’s statements about its own program, not independent verification of security, anonymity, or data handling. Nielsen Computer & Mobile Panel FAQ

Data brokers may hold or infer more than basic contact details. California lists identifiers, browsing history, precise location, interests, health-related information, and shopping habits among the types of information brokers may collect. It says brokers may also infer details about health, family, or finances. California notes that exceptions and information governed by other laws can apply, so a deletion request should not be understood as erasing every record everywhere. Compare the likely reward with the time, information, and ongoing access the program asks for. Before enrolling, review the current privacy notice and program terms for:
- Which data categories are collected, including whether activity is measured across devices.
- How long information is retained and whether it is shared with clients or service providers.
- What form rewards take, how often they are issued, and whether points expire.
- Eligibility requirements and whether the advertised amount is a maximum, variable reward, or guaranteed payment.
- How to stop participating and what happens to previously collected information.
- Whether other household members’ activity could be measured by software installed on shared devices.
For Nielsen, the FAQ says participants can leave the panel; it also says points expire one year after being credited or may be closed after six consecutive months of inactivity. Confirm those terms directly before relying on them. Nielsen Computer & Mobile Panel FAQ
Deletion and opt-out tools are for privacy, not earnings
California’s DROP
California residents can use the Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) to submit a single deletion request to active data brokers in the state’s system. The state says consumers could submit requests starting in January 2026, and brokers must begin processing them at least once every 45 days starting August 1, 2026. The tool requests deletion; it does not pay consumers. Its reach is limited to the applicable California system, and legal exceptions may apply. California DROP for data brokers

People-search opt-outs
People-search sites may compile reports using data from other brokers, public social-media profiles, and public records. The FTC says paid services take steps to opt consumers out of these sites, but cautions that this may not address all privacy concerns. Do not assume an opt-out removes information from every source or changes public records. FTC: What To Know About People Search Sites That Sell Your Information
