No manufacturer-listed example verified here combines a 1 Hz minimum, a 1 GHz maximum, and a price below $1,000. The cited under-$1,000 waveform generators reach 50–60 MHz, while the cited RIGOL RF generator reaches 1.50 GHz but is listed at $2,099. Whether one instrument is right for you also depends on the kind of signal and performance your test requires.

What the cited models actually cover

These examples show why the exact model and instrument class matter. A family name can cover multiple frequency variants, and a generator’s maximum frequency alone does not tell you whether it can produce the signal your test needs.

Model or family Manufacturer-listed frequency coverage Manufacturer-listed price What it tells you
RIGOL DG1000Z Models up to 60 MHz Starting at $389 A lower-frequency waveform-generator example, not a 1 GHz source.
RIGOL DG800 Pro Models up to 50 MHz Starting at $419 A lower-frequency waveform-generator example, not a 1 GHz source.
RIGOL DSG815 Maximum frequency 1.50 GHz $2,099 Meets the upper-frequency requirement in this comparison, but exceeds the stated new-instrument budget.
RIGOL DSG800 family Not stated for the family as a whole in the cited catalog $2,099–$5,860 across the family Prices and configurations vary; check the exact model.

RIGOL lists the DG1000Z family from $389 and models up to 60 MHz on its DG1000Z product page; the DG800 Pro page lists models up to 50 MHz, starting at $419: DG800 Pro product page. Its DSG815 listing gives a 1.50 GHz maximum and $2,099 price, while the RF signal-generator catalog lists the DSG800 family from $2,099 to $5,860. These manufacturer-listed figures were accessed in 2026; prices and availability may change. They are product examples, not market-wide statistics.

Why waveform and RF generators are not interchangeable

Function and arbitrary waveform generators

These instruments create low-frequency or baseband waveforms for tasks such as driving a circuit input or testing response to a chosen waveform. A unit with a 50 or 60 MHz maximum does not thereby become a 1 GHz RF carrier source.

RF signal generators

An RF generator is intended to provide a carrier in the radio-frequency range. Reaching a specified maximum frequency does not, on its own, establish signal purity, usable output level, modulation options, or accuracy. Confirm those specifications against the actual test requirement.

How to decide what you need

  1. Define the signal. Decide whether the test needs a baseband waveform, a calibrated RF carrier, or both. If it needs both, assess whether two instruments are more suitable than trying to make one cover both jobs.
  2. Check the exact model’s frequency limits. Verify both the minimum and maximum frequency in its specifications. Do not infer a specific model’s range from its product-family name.
  3. Match output and signal quality to the test. Compare output-level range and accuracy, phase noise, frequency resolution and stability, and any required modulation—such as AM, FM, PM, pulse, or I/Q.
  4. Check purchase configuration. Confirm which options are included, calibration status, connector type, and current price before choosing a unit. The cited listings do not provide a complete cross-brand comparison or establish performance through hands-on testing.

Does a sub-$1,000 solution exist?

The cited manufacturer examples do not show a new instrument under $1,000 spanning 1 Hz through 1 GHz. They are not an exhaustive survey of brands, used equipment, or assembled and DIY solutions, so they do not prove that no alternative exists. For a new purchase, verify any candidate’s exact specifications and current price rather than assuming a particular model meets the full span.

Choosing an RF cable

A coaxial cable connects equipment; it does not extend a generator’s specified frequency range. Match the cable’s connector gender to the instrument ports, its impedance to the setup, and its rated frequency range to the signal. RIGOL lists an N-to-SMA cable accessory, but that does not make it suitable for every bench or instrument; check your port types and required bandwidth.

  • Test methods: During the test, the frequency of the source input transceiver is first set to -100DB or any value. The intercom has audio output and then reduces the output strength of the source. For example, the -120DB just heard the intercom audio but there was noise. The audio just hears that the -120DB value of this output is the receiving sensitivity of the radio.
