Usually, you cannot eliminate backlight bleed yourself. It comes from uneven light distribution in an LCD panel. You may make it less noticeable by adjusting brightness, room lighting, or your viewing position, but those steps do not repair the panel. If the bright areas remain obvious during ordinary use, document them and ask the device maker to assess the screen; repair or replacement depends on the model, warranty, region, and manufacturer’s decision.
What backlight bleed looks like
An LCD uses a backlight behind its display layers. Uneven light may show around the edges or in particular areas, especially when the screen displays dark content in a dim room. It may be called backlight bleed, light leakage, or light bleeding. BenQ notes that it can occur with edge-lit and other backlit LCD monitors and may become more noticeable as screen illumination increases (BenQ support guidance).
A black screen in a completely dark room can make the effect look more severe than it is during normal use. Judge it from your usual sitting position and in ordinary room lighting before deciding that the screen needs service.

IPS glow can resemble light leakage, but it tends to change when you alter your viewing angle or distance. Dell describes light leakage as more consistent when angle and distance change, while IPS glow is angle- and distance-dependent (Dell’s guide to IPS glow and light leakage).

- Glow that shifts or fades as you move: it may be IPS glow. Check from your normal viewing position rather than an extreme angle.
- Bright areas that stay in the same places: they may indicate light leakage, though a visual check alone does not establish whether the panel qualifies for service.
Dell suggests letting covered monitors warm up for about 30 minutes before adjusting them and gives 30–50% brightness as a troubleshooting starting point. These are Dell-specific suggestions, not universal settings or defect thresholds.
How to check the screen in normal conditions
- Set up your usual viewing conditions. Turn on ordinary room lighting and sit at your normal distance and angle. Do not use a pitch-black room as the sole test.
- Check more than a black screen. Look at dark and bright content, then adjust brightness up and down to see whether the bright areas change.
- Reposition yourself. Change your viewing angle and distance. A glow that changes substantially may be IPS glow rather than fixed light leakage.
- Compare cautiously, if possible. Viewing the same image on the same model at matched brightness can provide context, but a difference alone does not determine warranty coverage.
- Record persistent symptoms. If the issue remains visible in normal room light, take a photo under those conditions and note the model and warranty details. Dell recommends providing support with a photo when the issue persists.
Lighting figures published by Dell describe its own inspection environments, not universal pass-or-fail limits: Dell’s laptop guidance cites 150–200 lux for normal office lighting, while its general monitor guidance says ordinary monitors are inspected at 150 lux and gaming monitors at 70 lux. Those values should not be treated as industry-wide standards or proof that a screen is defective.

What you can do to make it less noticeable
- Use comfortable brightness. Lowering brightness or gamma may reduce how conspicuous leakage looks, particularly on dark content; it does not fix the panel.
- Adjust the display position. Set the screen at a comfortable height, angle, and distance. This can help with angle-dependent IPS glow.
- Keep some ambient light in the room. A normally lit room makes it easier to judge the screen as you actually use it and can make edge glow less distracting.
These are visibility adjustments, not repairs. Avoid pressing or massaging the panel, opening the display, or applying cleaners as generic fixes; without model-specific manufacturer guidance, these actions are not established remedies.

When to contact the manufacturer
Ask the device maker for an assessment if bright areas remain clearly visible in ordinary room lighting, do not change with brightness adjustment, interfere with comfortable work, or look conspicuously worse than another same-model screen. Dell lists similar signs in its guidance for Dell laptops and monitors; they are useful prompts to seek an assessment, not guarantees of a defect finding or coverage.

Contact the manufacturer or its authorized support channel with the model, a description of when the issue appears, and photos taken in normal room light. Ask what inspection, repair, or replacement options apply to your exact device. General guidance cannot establish whether a particular screen is covered, what a repair would cost, or whether the maker will replace it.

There is no single repair method or cost that applies to an unspecified LCD screen. Whether service is available depends on the device and the manufacturer’s assessment. Get model-specific advice before considering a repair or buying a replacement panel; if the screen is under warranty, check its terms and contact the maker before paying for work.
