Yes—some Wolffia species are eaten as food. Fresh Wolffia arrhiza and Wolffia globosa have a documented traditional-food history in parts of Southeast Asia, and EFSA raised no safety objection to a specific fresh-food notification. That does not mean every Wolffia product is cleared: EFSA could not establish safety for proposed uses of W. globosa powder because of concern about manganese intake.
What is Wolffia, and how is it eaten?
Wolffia is a genus of tiny aquatic plants in the duckweed family, sometimes called water lentils. The food-safety assessments discussed here concern particular species and forms, especially fresh W. arrhiza and W. globosa, and dried W. globosa powder.
Fresh Wolffia is described as a vegetable. Powder is made by cultivating W. globosa, washing it, and drying it; it has been proposed for use as a food ingredient or supplement. Those forms should not be treated as interchangeable: evidence about one does not automatically establish the safety of the other.

The FDA record says evaluation ceased at the notifier’s request, so it is not FDA approval or an endorsement of Wolffia products generally: FDA GRAS Notice 984.

Is Wolffia safe to eat?
Fresh whole plants
EFSA’s 2021 technical report considered a notification for fresh W. arrhiza and W. globosa as a traditional food from a third country. It reported more than 25 years of consumption in Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand. For the specific fresh plants and cultivation conditions described in the notification, EFSA said the available composition, history-of-use, and cultivation data did not raise safety concerns and raised no objection to placing that food on the EU market. This conclusion is limited to the notified food; it does not establish the safety of every species, harvest, growing method, or preparation. Read EFSA’s 2021 technical report.
W. globosa powder
EFSA assessed the powder separately and could not establish its safety for the proposed novel-food uses. The panel’s concern was increased manganese intake at the proposed consumption levels. It also noted that trace-element and contaminant concentrations can depend on cultivation and fertilizer composition, and that allergic reactions are possible given the powder’s protein content. Although the panel did not identify concerns for heavy metals and microcystins at the proposed uses, that did not resolve the manganese concern. Read EFSA’s powder assessment.

What nutrition does Wolffia provide?
A 2018 study surveying all 11 Wolffia species reported the following composition ranges by freeze-dried weight:

These are survey values, not a nutrition label for fresh Wolffia or a specific packaged product. The study reports that nutritional components vary by species, genetic background, and cultivation conditions. What should you check before buying Wolffia?
- Species and format: Identify whether the product is fresh whole plant or dried powder, and check which Wolffia species it contains.
- Cultivation and quality controls: Look for clear sourcing and production information, since growing conditions and fertilizer composition can affect trace elements and contaminants.
- Product-specific nutrition: Compare the label’s serving basis with the freeze-dried values in the study; do not assume they apply directly to fresh food.
- Regulatory wording: Distinguish EFSA’s no-objection conclusion for the described fresh traditional food from its powder assessment, which did not establish safety for proposed uses. An FDA GRAS notice record is not the same as FDA approval.
