There is no blanket answer for every Rivian R2. The NHTSA battery-pack recall filing identified here covers certain 2025 R1T and R1S vehicles—not the R2. Check your R2’s VIN and Rivian’s notice before driving. If a notice says not to drive, follow it; if the vehicle-specific instructions are missing or unclear, contact Rivian Service before using the vehicle.
What the battery-pack recall covers
NHTSA report 25V537 concerns certain model-year 2025 Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles. It describes a potentially improper ground connection inside the High Voltage Distribution Box (HVDB), which could cause a loss of motive power without warning and increase crash risk. The filing does not list the R2, so this campaign should not be described as an R2 battery recall. Read NHTSA report 25V537.
For the vehicles included in that R1 campaign, Rivian’s stated remedy is to inspect and repair the HVDB ground-strap joint or replace the high-voltage battery pack. The filing reports 23 vehicles potentially involved and estimates that 25% had the defect; those figures apply to this specific R1 campaign, not to R2 vehicles. NHTSA’s report says Rivian was not aware of related accidents or injuries at the time of the filing; that is not a guarantee about events after the report.

- Look up the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup. The VIN is commonly visible at the lower-left corner of the windshield and on vehicle documents.
- Check Rivian’s messages and owner account. A recently announced recall may not yet appear for every VIN in NHTSA’s lookup. The tool also does not show non-safety campaigns or recalls that have already been repaired.
- Read the interim instructions for your vehicle. If Rivian’s notice says “do not drive,” do not drive. If the instruction is absent or unclear, contact Rivian Service for guidance before using the vehicle. NHTSA advises owners to follow the interim safety guidance in the manufacturer’s notice.
- Arrange recall service if your VIN is covered. Follow Rivian’s instructions for the applicable campaign. The HVDB remedy in report 25V537 is for the covered R1 population; it does not establish an R2 repair procedure or authorize an owner repair.
A clean NHTSA lookup is useful, but it is not conclusive if you have received a newer Rivian notice or an unresolved vehicle warning. Base the immediate driving decision on the instructions tied to your VIN, and ask Rivian Service when those instructions do not settle it.

Keep separate Rivian campaigns distinct
NHTSA campaign 26V009, dated January 2026, concerns potentially loose second-row seat-belt retractor bolts on certain 2022–2025 R1T and 2022–2026 R1S vehicles. Its remedy is inspection and tightening as needed. It is separate from the HVDB battery-pack recall and does not list the R2. See NHTSA notice 26V009.
Rivian’s R2 launch article says customer deliveries began June 9, 2026, but launch information is not a recall register and cannot establish whether a particular R2 VIN has a later recall. See Rivian’s R2 launch information.
