Often, yes—but smart-home devices do not have one universal AI-off switch. You usually need to disable a specific feature in its app, and what keeps working depends on the device, the feature and whether it relies on the cloud. Turning off an AI camera feature, for example, is not the same as disabling the camera or switching off every assistant or history setting.

What does turning off AI actually disable?

“AI” can refer to several separate functions: camera recognition or descriptions, a voice assistant, personalized results, or activity history. A setting for one does not necessarily control the others. Google documents camera-feature controls separately from Gemini for Home voice-assistant settings and Home History, so check the precise feature name rather than assuming a single switch covers the whole home.

Before changing anything, identify the manufacturer, exact model, feature name, app and software or firmware version. Then check the maker’s current instructions for that model. The available platform guidance does not establish what every camera, lock, speaker or other device does when a particular AI feature is disabled.

How to find and turn off a feature

Google Home camera features

For a Google Home camera, Google documents this route: Home app → Cameras → select the camera → player/settings → Events, then turn off Gemini for Home camera features. Google says this can be managed for selected cameras as well as turned off. App labels and menu locations can change, so consult the current Google camera feature instructions if the path differs.

This control is for Gemini for Home camera features; it does not, by itself, establish whether recording, alerts, remote viewing or other camera functions continue. Verify each function you rely on after changing the setting.

Voice assistant, history and personalization

Google provides separate settings for Gemini for Home voice assistant, Home History and personal results. Review the relevant controls in the Home app if you want to change more than camera features. Turning off or deleting activity history is a privacy control; it does not prove that the assistant or all AI processing has been disabled. Google also says a home that switches to Gemini for Home voice assistant cannot switch back to Google Assistant. The option is rolling out to eligible devices, countries and languages, so availability varies. See Google’s Gemini for Home voice-assistant help and Home History and personal-results controls.

What may keep working when AI is off?

Basic device controls or automations may continue if they run locally, but do not assume they will. Google says Matter-enabled devices are designed to carry out supported commands over the existing home network without an internet cloud connection. That applies to supported Matter commands, not automatically to proprietary AI features or every device function. Which commands are available depends on the device and integration. See Google’s Matter guidance.

Apple describes Home accessories as controlled by Apple devices rather than the cloud and identifies Matter compatibility; that is a platform description, not a guarantee about every accessory’s vendor-specific services. Amazon documents local connectivity options between Echo devices and smart-home products, which can keep some Alexa voice interactions responsive when internet or cloud infrastructure is down. Neither statement means that every routine, voice request or cloud feature works offline. See Amazon’s Alexa local connectivity documentation and Apple’s Home overview.

Local control and AI settings are different questions: disabling an AI feature does not necessarily disable a local command, and a device’s ability to work locally does not show that its AI feature runs locally. Cloud-dependent services may stop when the internet is unavailable even if local controls remain.

What to test after changing a setting

Make a short checklist of the functions that matter for your device and test them individually. These are items to verify, not features guaranteed to survive an AI change or internet outage.

Why there is no universal offline answer

Whether a function continues depends on the model, named feature, software version and whether the function is handled locally or by a cloud service. The platform documentation describes some local capabilities, but it does not provide a complete cross-brand list of what remains after each AI feature is disabled. Check the manufacturer’s current support page or manual for your exact device, and do not rely on a general Matter or assistant-platform statement as proof that a specific recording, alert, lock control or automation will work offline.
