Yes, you can make a pixelated picture look smoother, sharper, or larger, but you generally cannot recover the exact fine detail that was discarded. Resizing, deblocking, and AI super-resolution can improve appearance in different ways; when a method generates detail, that detail is an estimate, not proof of what the original showed.
What does “depixelate” mean?
“Depixelate” is an informal umbrella term, not one specific image operation. It may refer to making a small image larger, reducing visible compression blocks, or using a model to estimate a higher-resolution version. Those approaches address different problems, so a smoother result is not necessarily a more faithful one.
| Approach | What it does | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Interpolation (ordinary resizing) | Calculates intermediate pixel values to enlarge a raster image; this can soften block edges. | A larger image, not newly measured source detail. |
| Deblocking | Targets block-like artifacts, often associated with compression. | Potentially less visible blocking; it does not prove what fine detail was present before degradation. |
| Super-resolution | Estimates a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution input, often using learned patterns or other prior assumptions. | A plausible reconstruction, not necessarily the original detail. |
Super-resolution is inherently ambiguous when it starts from one low-resolution image: more than one high-resolution image can explain the same input, and those possibilities can differ in texture or semantic details. See the CVPR paper “Explorable Super Resolution” and Google Research’s Pixel Recursive Super Resolution.

What can enhancement improve—and what can’t it verify?
Enhancement can improve perceived appearance, suppress some artifacts, and produce plausible texture. But when the original fine detail is missing, a single degraded image does not tell the software which of several plausible reconstructions is the true one. A generated face, letter, or texture can look convincing without being reliable evidence. This is a limitation of the information available in the input, not a claim that every model invents detail in every output.
#1 Best Overall
- The easiest way to scan photos and documents. Supports 3x5, 4x6, 5x7, and 8x10 in sizes photo scanning but also letter and A4 size paper. Optical Resolution is up to 600 dpi ( PS: two setting: 300dpi/ 600dpi).
- Fast and easy, 2 seconds for one 4x6 photo and 5 seconds for one 8x10 size photo@300dpi. You can easily convert about 1000 photos to digitize files in one afternoon and share with your family or friends.
- More efficient than a flatbed scanner. Just insert the photos one by one and then scan. This makes ePhoto much more efficient than a flatbed scanner.
- Powerful Image Enhancement functions included. Quickly enhance and restore old faded images with a click of the mouse.
For example, Adobe Research describes Photoshop and Lightroom Super Resolution as using machine learning to quadruple photo resolution. That describes an increase in output resolution, not proof that exact missing details have been recovered. See Adobe Research’s explanation of Super Resolution.
Why results depend on the kind of image
An approach suited to one type of image may not work for another. Adobe Research’s 2023 work on antialiased raster clip-art addresses low-resolution images with a limited palette and distinct regions. It combines learned estimates with domain-specific assumptions and partitioning to reconstruct structure that viewers perceive. The page notes that existing applicable algorithms did not produce outputs consistent with human expectations for this particular task. That specialized result should not be generalized to ordinary photographs. Read the Adobe Research paper on subpixel deblurring of raster clip-art.

Can you recover a pixelated face?
Software may generate a plausible face from a pixelated image, but plausibility is not identification. A 2022 Neurocomputing study investigated pixelized-face recovery and defenses, reporting experiments that included the CelebA dataset of 182,732 face images. That dataset size describes the study; it is not a population statistic, nor does the work establish that every pixelated face can be recovered or identified. Treat reconstructed facial details as uncertain unless independent evidence supports them. The study is titled “Delving deep into pixelized face recovery and defense”.

Do not treat pixelation as an absolute guarantee that sensitive content cannot be inferred. Research into recovery from pixelized faces shows that this is an active technical problem, but it does not demonstrate that any particular person can be identified from any particular image. If disclosure could cause harm, avoid publishing the sensitive detail in the first place rather than relying on a pixelated version to conceal it.

When should you trust an enhanced image?
For casual viewing, choosing the version that looks best may be enough. For scientific, journalistic, legal, or other evidentiary uses, separate visual enhancement from observation: a generated detail should not be presented as though it were recorded in the unaltered source. The U.S. Office of Research Integrity warns that artifacts can be mistaken for part of an original observation and advises explaining image alterations in figure legends. Its guidance is in “Questionable Practices.”
- Keep the unaltered original and preserve a traceable link to it.
- Identify the processing used and distinguish observed pixels from estimated detail.
- Do not use a visually convincing reconstruction alone to establish a person’s identity, text, or other disputed detail.
- When image fidelity matters, disclose alterations clearly, including in figure legends where applicable.
When evaluating an enhancement workflow, consider the source problem (compression blocks, undersampling, blur, or deliberate pixelation), the method, the intended use, and whether the output remains traceable to the original. A visual preference is not the same as verified recovery.
