Yes, an LGA 1700 processor can be delidded with a compatible specialist tool, but Intel does not recommend it and says removing the integrated heat spreader (IHS) voids the warranty. Delidding is a high-risk modification intended for a direct-die cooling setup—not a routine way to improve temperatures.
What delidding an LGA 1700 CPU involves
Delidding means removing the CPU’s integrated heat spreader, the metal lid that sits over the processor dies. For Intel Core 13th- and 14th-generation parts, Thermal Grizzly describes the interface as soldered. It says removing that solder and reinstalling the IHS is not the intended approach because it would leave too large a gap. Its described use case is direct-die cooling: mounting a compatible cooler onto the exposed dies. This is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a general installation recommendation.
A delidding tool does not make the modification safe, preserve the warranty, or ensure a temperature improvement. Intel’s direct answer is that delidding is not recommended and voids the warranty: Intel Support’s delidding guidance.

Thermal Grizzly reports that direct-die cooling can reduce temperatures by 10–15 °C on 13th- and 14th-generation Intel Core CPUs when liquid metal such as Conductonaut is used as the thermal interface material. That is a conditional manufacturer-reported result, not independent testing or a guaranteed result for every CPU, cooler, or workload. The product page attributes its example i9-13900K test to Roman Hartung.
#1 Best Overall
- DER8AUER DELIDDING TOOL - Compatible with 12th/13th Intel Core generation, developed by Roman "der8auer" Hartung
- DURABILITY AND AESTHETICS - Made from black and red anodized aluminum
- REMOVES THE HEATSPREADER - Enables more ecient "Direct Die" cooling, resulting in temperature reduction by 10-20°C
- IMPROVED COOLING PERFORMANCE - Facilitates better heat dissipation, enhancing the overall cooling eciency of the CPU
- EFFORTLESS INSTALLATION - Designed for easy and hassle-free operation, making the delidding process straightforward and efficient
In its English datasheet, Thermal Grizzly also reports an average of 77.5 °C for Roman Hartung’s i9-13900K example using an EK direct-die cooler, compared with 88.4 °C using the same cooler with an undelidded CPU and contact frame. These are the manufacturer’s reported figures for that setup, not a controlled independent comparison. They should not be treated as a forecast for a different system.
Warranty and hardware risks
Intel Support states: “No, removing the IHS (known as delidding) is not recommended, and it will void the warranty.” Intel also says tampering with a boxed processor violates its three-year limited warranty. Its physical-damage guidance covers damage caused by improper integration or installation, or use outside design specifications.

- DER8AUER - Delidding tool for AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs developed by Roman "DER8AUER" Hartung
- DURABILITY AND AESTHETICS - Made from black and red anodized aluminum for longevity and visual appeal
- IDEAL FOR SOLDERED RYZEN 7000 PROCESSORS - Enables better heat transfer using liquid metal
- COMPATIBLE WITH AM5 PLATFORM - Enhances cooling performance despite thicker and smaller heatspreaders compared to AM4
- REMOVES THE HEATSPREADER - Facilitates more efficient "Direct Die" cooling, reducing temperatures by 10-20°C
There is no universal safe delidding procedure established by the Intel guidance cited here. Intel’s LGA 1700 installation instructions concern installing the processor in its socket—not removing the IHS. They warn that incorrect processor installation can damage the CPU and make it inoperable. For normal installation, Intel instructs users to align the pin-one marker and socket notches, and check that the four corner heights are level before actuating the loading mechanism. Those instructions are not a delidding method.
Tool and cooling compatibility
Thermal Grizzly lists its Intel 13th Gen Delid-Die-Mate for LGA 1700 and says it is compatible with Intel Core generations 12, 13, and 14. That tool’s compatibility does not mean every LGA 1700 processor, cooler, or motherboard combination is suitable for direct-die cooling.

- Package Contents: Includes 1 piece CPU Base Holder LGA 1700 socket connector ready for installation
- Lead-Free Solder: Features lead-free solder balls pre-installed for environmentally conscious and professional-grade installation
- Professional Installation Required: Replacing the CPU socket connector requires professional technical skills and specialized tools such as BGA rework equipment
- Socket Compatibility: Standard 1700 contact points designed for desktop motherboard compatibility with LGA1700 socket architecture
Thermal Grizzly identifies the Intel Mycro Direct-Die V1 as an LGA 1700 water cooler for delidded CPUs. Before choosing any direct-die hardware, verify current compatibility for the exact processor, motherboard, and cooling configuration. A tool alone is not the complete setup: the direct-die route also requires a compatible cooler and thermal interface material, and the cited temperature claim specifically involves liquid metal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is delidding worth it for your system?
For a working CPU and a reader seeking a simple temperature fix, the warranty loss and risk of rendering the processor unusable weigh heavily against delidding. It is a specialized option only for someone deliberately pursuing direct-die cooling and prepared to accept those costs and risks. The cited manufacturer claims suggest a possible temperature benefit in a particular setup, but they do not establish that delidding is worthwhile for every user.

- Applicable model: 3770K 4790K 6700K E3-1230 7700K 8700K 115x interface.
- Alloy metal material, surface spraying treatment, hard and not easy to break, can completely replace bench vise, suitable for intel 115x series CPU lid opener (7700K, such as the seventh generation U).
- The CPU is clamped back and forth by rotating the screw rod to push the slider (the CPU cannot be moved after clamping, do not worry about it will shake), and the top cover and the substrate can be separated horizontally by the front and back clamping force. There is no force on the left and right sides of the top, bottom, and all lid openers are based on this principle. They are all violent lid openings.
- Steps to use the lid opener (before opening the lid, you can use a hot air blower to heat the top cover of the CPU to soften the glue, which makes it easier to open. Like some 6700K 7700K, it sticks very tightly. It is especially necessary to heat the top cover to soften the glue.
