Usually, you can turn on a Sony BRAVIA using the TV’s physical button, but that may not let you finish setup. Sony says some models have limited power, volume, or input controls on the TV; HOME and arrow navigation are on the supplied remote. Your best next step is to identify the exact model, then try a supported USB keyboard or wired connection if setup is stuck at Wi-Fi. Phone apps work only on supported TVs that meet their network and account requirements. If you cannot navigate the setup screens, use a replacement remote verified for your model.
Start by identifying your BRAVIA model and its controls
Find the model number on the TV and open its Sony support page and Help Guide. Button placement and available controls vary by model and operating system, so the manual is the authority for what the physical button can do on your set. Sony’s US guidance says some TVs let you use buttons on the set for functions such as power, volume, or input, but HOME and arrow buttons are only on the supplied remote. Sony’s guidance on operating a TV without its remote was last modified June 24, 2026; Sony’s BRAVIA support pages let you look up model-specific instructions.
Press the TV’s physical power/control button to turn it on. If the welcome or language screen appears but you cannot move the selection or confirm it, repeated presses may not substitute for directional controls. Check the manual for that model’s button behavior before trying to advance.
Can you connect the TV to Wi-Fi without a remote?
Possibly, if your model supports a USB keyboard and you can reach the network step. Sony’s first-time setup flow presents language and privacy choices before network setup. In its documented Easy Wi-Fi flow, you can choose a network or WPS option and follow the prompts; an optional USB keyboard can enter the Wi-Fi password. Sony also says the Wi-Fi screen is skipped when the TV uses a wired network connection. Sony’s first-time setup instructions describe these options.

Try a USB keyboard for password entry
Sony’s general keyboard-connection guidance applies to Android TV devices. Confirm compatibility with your exact model and operating system rather than assuming every BRAVIA accepts keyboard input in the same way. Sony’s setup guidance supports using a keyboard to type the Wi-Fi password; it does not establish that a keyboard replaces the remote for HOME, arrow, or confirmation controls across all models. Use Ethernet to bypass the Wi-Fi password screen
If your TV and network equipment support a wired connection, connect an Ethernet cable before proceeding through setup. Sony says a wired network skips the Wi-Fi screen in its documented setup flow. That avoids entering a wireless password, but it does not guarantee you can navigate the remaining setup screens without a remote.

Skip network setup only if you can select the option
Sony’s setup instructions allow you to skip network setup and configure it later. This may get you past the network step if the controls available on the TV let you make that selection. It will not resolve a later screen that requires navigation you cannot perform.

When can a phone app control the TV?
Sony documents two phone-control options: Sony | BRAVIA Connect and the Google TV app. Which one applies depends on the TV model. Sony’s app instructions require the phone and TV to be on the same Wi-Fi network, and a Google Account must be logged in on the TV. Google TV app pairing also requires you to enter a pairing code displayed on the TV. These prerequisites make a phone app an unreliable way to begin setup from scratch: the TV may not yet be on Wi-Fi or ready for account-based pairing. The apps are most useful after the TV has joined the same network and completed enough setup to pair.

When a replacement remote is the practical fix
If the TV’s controls cannot navigate setup and the app prerequisites are not met, use a replacement remote that is confirmed to work with your exact model. Sony’s no-remote guidance points owners to their model’s manual, and its missing-remote guidance notes that some operations may be unavailable without the remote. Why a factory reset usually will not help
A reset is not a general workaround for a missing remote. The cited forced-reset procedure is specifically for BRAVIA 3 (S30), not all BRAVIA models. Sony warns that it removes accounts, downloaded apps, personalized settings, and wired and Wi-Fi network settings.
