Sometimes—but not on every airline, and not automatically. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Family Seating Dashboard lists five airlines that commit to seating an accompanying adult next to a child age 13 or under at no extra cost across fare types: Alaska, American, Frontier, Hawaiian and JetBlue. Allegiant, Delta, Southwest and United do not make that commitment on the dashboard. Each airline’s conditions matter, and the dashboard describes airline commitments—not a universal federal requirement.
Policy status here reflects the DOT dashboard, which says it was last updated September 5, 2025, and the 2026 federal rulemaking record. Check the current DOT dashboard and the airline’s policy before booking.
Which airlines guarantee free seats together?
The DOT dashboard’s specific measure is whether an airline commits to adjacent seats for a child age 13 or under and an accompanying adult, at no additional cost across all fare types. Its current listed commitments are:

See the DOT Airline Family Seating Dashboard for its linked airline policies. A “yes” does not guarantee that every person in a larger family group will sit together; the commitment concerns a child and an accompanying adult, subject to availability, reservation and seating conditions.

What conditions can affect the commitment?
For airlines that assign seats, DOT lists conditions that may apply. The airline may require the child and adult to be on the same reservation, and adjacent seats to be available at booking in the class selected. It may also require the adult either to select seats for everyone on the reservation or to skip seat selection for everyone, without later changing the assignments. A smaller replacement aircraft, the cabin layout or the number of children and adults in the group can make adjacent seating physically impossible.
When those conditions are met, DOT says assignment is due no later than the day before the flight. For an airline using open seating, possible conditions differ: the child and adult must be on one reservation, the adult must tell a gate agent about the need for adjacent seats before boarding begins, and the layout must make it possible. Check the airline’s current policy for the particular itinerary.

Frontier’s policy as an example
Frontier’s FAQ, modified February 20, 2026, says a child 13 or younger will sit next to an accompanying adult over 13 at no extra cost when everyone is on the same reservation, adjacent seats are available at booking, the group selects seats for everyone or skips seat selection for everyone, and the aircraft layout allows it. Frontier says assignments may not appear immediately but will be confirmed by the day before departure. Read its family seating FAQ for the airline’s full terms.

- Read the airline’s policy before buying. Use the carrier’s family seating information and fare rules; if the terms are unclear, contact reservations. DOT’s family travel guidance links to airline pages.
- Check whether the fare lets you choose seats. DOT notes that basic economy fares are often cheaper and may not permit seat selection. If sitting together is important, compare the fare’s seat rules or consider an airline that makes the fee-free commitment.
- Book early and keep the party on one reservation. Early booking can make adjacent seats more likely to be available. Put the child and accompanying adult on the same reservation record.
- If seats are separated at booking, contact the airline. Ask whether adjacent seats may become available later and what steps you should take. Do not assume the airline will automatically reunite the party.
- Confirm assignments before travel. Aircraft substitutions can change seat assignments. If the seats have changed, contact the airline promptly; if you booked through a third party, verify assignments directly with the carrier well before departure.
- Allow time at the airport to ask for help. If the whole group cannot sit together, ask whether each child can at least sit next to an adult family member. Children under 15 and people caring for small children may not sit in exit rows; check the airline’s exit-row rules.
Is free family seating required by federal law?
Not as a general rule reflected in the available federal record. The 2026 Unified Agenda entry for the DOT’s family-seating rulemaking says the department has issued a proposed rule that would require airlines to seat children age 13 and under next to an accompanying adult at no additional cost, subject to limited conditions. It classifies the action as a long-term action and lists the next action as undetermined; it does not establish that a final rule is in force. What if an adult is helping a child with a disability?
A separate DOT accommodation may apply when an adult assists a child with a disability during the flight with a function that airline personnel are not required to perform. DOT says the airline must provide a seat next to the child in the purchased class without charging for those adjacent seats after the traveler self-identifies. Start with the airline’s reservations or airport staff and explain that a child and accompanying adult need adjacent seats. Keep your booking details and any confirmation of seat assignments available. The DOT dashboard provides information about family seating commitments and the department’s complaint options; review it if you believe an airline has not followed its stated policy.
